SUMMARY

In a safe, efficient and professional manner the Maintenance Assistant will support the Maintenance Manager, Shop Supervisor, and Mechanics by supporting maintenance operations for the assigned location. Under direct supervision, the Maintenance Assistant will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance inspections and, assisting mechanics in the corrective, and general maintenance and repairs of all equipment, vehicles, machinery, facilities, and controls located throughout the facility. The Maintenance Assistant will also perform routine and on-going inspections, assessments, tests, and analysis of data, to support the proper functioning of all facilities and equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Under the supervision and direction of Mechanics, Shift Lead Mechanic, or Shop Supervisor; the duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform pre- and post-operation inspections and associated maintenance of equipment and documenting all discrepancies and work performed
  • Responsible for lubrication and routine maintenance of assigned equipment 
  • Independently performs and records scheduled Preventative Maintenance (PM) services on diesel, gasoline, and propane powered equipment, including fluid and filter exchange, greasing, cleaning and inspection of safety critical items.
  • Retrieves, documents, and restocks parts and supplies.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate stock of parts and materials by documenting receipt and use of materials and performing routine inventories. 
  • Completes daily inspection reports and forwards to maintenance personnel as required.
  • Under guidance of senior mechanics, perform intermediate level repairs such as brake jobs, hydraulic hose replacements, starter/alternator replacements, tune-ups, and radiator repairs or replacements.
  • Assist senior mechanics with higher level repairs, such as engine and transmission repairs and replacements, fuel system repairs, and hydraulic system repairs.
  • Perform emergency/unscheduled repairs on equipment in a timely manner to minimize downtime.
  • Signs equipment out to operations personnel. Performs and documents daily equipment inventories, locations, and operational status
  • Observe all OSHA and facility safety regulations, including use of personal protective equipment and reports ALL incidents through company’s reporting protocol.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping standards.
  • Clean and wash excess oil/grease/dirt from equipment and work areas using pressure washers and detergents.
  • Support company safety initiatives.
  • Demonstration of knowledge of all required competencies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 The following are the minimum qualifications that an individual needs in order to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule: days, nights, weekends and emergencies.
  • Valid State Driver’s License including clean DMV record.
  • Valid TWIC card or the ability to obtain. 
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Previous experience with industrial or heavy equipment maintenance or related military training.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, diagrams, drawings, manuals, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write routine reports and correspondence in English.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts.
  • Ability to utilize various computer programs, tablets, smartphones, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  •  6 months of experience as a heavy equipment maintenance/ lube technician or certificate in equipment repair.

While performing the duties of this job, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic is regularly required to stand for extended intervals with occasional breaks, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The individual frequently is required to climb stairs and ladders. The individual must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, at higher than chest level and be able to tolerate adverse rooftop working conditions due to climate and tolerate extreme temperature changes.
