Upward Bound Resident Assistant/Mentors:
Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa is looking for resident assistants for the summer 2025 TRiO Upward Bound residential program.
The Upward Bound Resident Assistant/Mentor will provide direct services to Upward Bound project participants. These services will be related to assisting participants in the successful completion of academic coursework and personal development activities during the intensive six-week summer Upward Bound Program.
Employment duration is June 2nd – July 18th, 2025 excluding July 4th for the holiday. Weekends are off with the exception of move-in day on Sunday, June 8th.
Residence Hall life, remaining on campus, Sunday evening through Friday evening. This is a demanding and time consuming position so Resident Assistants cannot attend classes or have other part-time jobs during the employment period.
Compensation: $2,525 – $3,025 (amount dependent upon education and experience) for the duration of the employment contract (Sunday evening through Friday afternoon each week which includes one week of mandatory training). Room and board provided. Meals not provided Friday dinner through Sunday dinner.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Live in the residence hall; supervise all project participants in general and in assigned group.
- Transport students to and from home and/or field trips in SCC vans as necessary.
- Participate in summer activities (both daytime and evening activities during entire program duration).
- Accompany and supervise students during cultural and social activities.
- Clarify, monitor, and enforce rules consistently and report concerns/incidents in a timely manner.
- Attend Resident Assistant general meetings and meet with Upward Bound personnel when necessary.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of services provided to participants.
- Work with assigned instructors in class and support educational goals.
- Lead group study sessions; including tutoring and teaching study skills.
- Provide pleasant, comfortable atmosphere conducive to maximum student growth.
- Conduct periodic room inspections.
- Take primary responsibility for students in his/her group by monitoring academic, personal and social progress and updating other staff as necessary.
- Establish and maintain a positive and respectful, mentoring relationships with participants.
- Implement and supervise a six-week schedule of recreational and social activities.
- Establish positive relationships with parents and other primary caretakers of project participants.
- Uphold duty roster responsibilities (dining hall supervision, SFS guidelines, on-call duty, hall
- Handle and/or refer student disciplinary issues, crises and personal issues to appropriate staff, and make
- Conduct fire drills, tornado drills, building and room inspections, key and ID checks.
- Monitor visitor access to residence hall as well as participant movement in and out of the buildings.
- Commitment to helping students to succeed in higher education.
- Maintain valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Work cooperatively with SCC staff.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Abide by program rules which prohibit tobacco, alcohol and illegal drug use.

Qualifications and Experience:
- Recent college graduate preferred or college student with minimum of 1 year completion of college. Minimum grade point average of 2.50 or above required.
- Demonstrated experience working with academically challenged individuals and groups of students from diverse backgrounds.
- Prior experience tutoring in math, science, English (composition and/or literature), computers, foreign language, or a related elective subject area preferred.
- Prior experience assisting students with concerns related to academic, financial, vocational, or social issues.
- Experience working with students in a residential setting is highly desirable.
- Special consideration given to qualified candidate with background similar to the program’s target population.
- Ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of economically and educationally disadvantaged students and student with disabilities.
- Ability to be nonjudgmental, form trusting relationships, and build rapport with high school age students.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and other staff members.
- Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with program students and staff.
- Ability to maintain rapport, confidentiality, and accessibility.
- Documented evidence of excellent driving record and willingness to obtain chauffer’s license as well as ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Must possess the commitment and stamina to participate constructively in potentially stressful interactions and situations.
- Demonstrated maturity in using of appropriate leadership, communication, social and role modeling skills.
Physical Demands
Must have the ability, mobility and stamina to supervise students for 24 hours a day, five days a week.
