Southern Fuel Accounting supports fuel accounting for Southern Company and affiliates (APC, GPC, MPC, SNC, and SPC). This position will perform accounting and analytical tasks in support of the company’s fleet of coal and oil power plants.

Job Summary

Primary Job Responsibilities
- Perform monthly financial closing processes for fuel. This includes preparing journal entries, provide supporting calculations, variance analysis and monthly reconciliations.
- Prepare, process and resolve monthly billing for fuel related purchases.
- Provide key support and system testing for fuel management systems (ComTrac).
- Perform account reconciliations.
- Provide support for internal and external audits.
- Perform Financial Reporting related tasks in compliance with GAAP and Sarbanes/Oxley requirements. This includes providing reports, schedules, memos and explanations supporting each OpCo’s financial statements.
- Stay current with GAAP, FERC and state regulatory issues affecting fuel and provide input for needed accounting functionality changes.
- Perform the periodic publishing of various fuel related regulatory reports and data requests mandated by FERC, EIA, State PSC’s and others.
- A BS/BA degree with major or concentration in Accounting is required.
- Advanced degree or professional certification is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of recent general accounting experience (public accounting experience, preferred); including experience in financial reporting, journal entry preparation, and account reconciliations.
- Understanding of GAAP, FERC, SEC and other rules, regulations and reporting requirements, as well as Company policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of (or exposure to) Oracle Cloud
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, a commitment to accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-direct, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and build working relationships with both internal and external customers.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to identify and implement process improvements.
- Proficiency with Southern Company financial applications and processes is a plus.
- Microsoft Excel proficiency.
