Engineer/Analyst - Thermal Generation Development

This position will be located at the Energy Center in Birmingham, AL

Relocation will be considered; Travel required : up to 25%

POSITION SUMMARY

Thermal Generation within Generation Planning and Development has responsibility for assisting Southern Company's retail operating companies with the siting, development, and deployment of fossil-fueled power generation.

Responsibilities Include :

• Serving on project teams performing detailed siting studies and development activities for new thermal generating units at existing plant sites and greenfield locations from initial identification of need through regulatory certification
• Negotiation, development, and / or management of large contracts with major equipment manufacturers and third-party engineering firms
• Conducting economic evaluations and profitability analysis on proposed new generating units to support decision making around new generating units, with heavy use of spreadsheet-based financial models
• Coordinating inputs from diverse business units and functions across the enterprise to drive complex development projects toward goals
• Performing market intelligence efforts (technology development, pricing, commercial viability)
• Preparing and presenting project evaluation results and / or project business cases to all levels of enterprise-wide management and peer groups
