Description
This position supports the work of the Southern District YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
The Little River Counselor plans, leads, and implements camp programs for children attending Camp Little River during the operational season of June - Aug with an opportunity to continue employment in our before and after school programs.
Camp Counselors supervise juvenile campers and ensures their safety and general well-being while providing high-quality educational and recreational opportunities and enjoyable experiences for camp participants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide exceptional customer service.
- Engage with youth participants
- Facilitate daily schedule
- Assists with student drop-off and pick-up
- Use developmentally appropriate strategies to deal with student behaviors and elevate as needed
- Expected to attend all required meeting, events and trainings
- Maintain and display a positive attitude with families, staff, program stakeholders, and co-workers
- Represents the Y in a positive manner and uphold Y values at all times at program and in the community
- Help maintain program space, cleaning up at the end of the day
- Expected to come prepared for the day with appropriate clothing, change of clothes if necessary
- Expected to check email regularly and respond promptly, communicate any changes in their availability as soon as possible
- Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
- Attend required abuse risk management training.
- Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
- Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
- Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS
· Prior experience working with children preferred.
· Familiarity with various camp activities.
· Patient and reliable.
· Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information.
· Organizational and communication skills.
· Energetic and positive personality.
· Must be able to complete YMCA required training as scheduled by management.
· Must maintain updated certifications of the job (CPR and First Aid/AED).
· Must successfully clear FBI and state criminal background checks.
· Ability to stay calm in stressful situations.
· Ability to respond to critical incidents and act swiftly in emergency situations.
· Must be able to complete YMCA required training as scheduled by management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
· Ability to walk, stand or sit for long periods of time.
· Ability to bend, kneel, push, and pull.
· Ability to lift up to 15lbs.
· Ability to work outdoors for entire shift, regardless of weather.
