Position Summary

Southern Land Company, a national real estate development and construction firm headquartered in Nashville, TN is seeking a full-time Landscape Crew Leader to join our dynamic team at our Fairington Community.

The Landscape Crew Leader position will report to the on-site Landscape Manager and the Director of Horticulture for Fairington development in Nolensville, TN. This position will require strong communication and effective collaboration skills. Previous experience with irrigation, installation of plant materials, as well as use of various types of small engine & heavy load equipment are highly suggested. Applicant must be self motivated and work well in leadership position. Flexible knowledge and experience with the installation process as well as on-going maintenance of installed landscape spaces is encouraged. Spanish as a second language is helpful.

Essential Functions

  • Have a clear understanding of Southern Land’s horticulture standards of excellence as applicable to the particular properties they maintain and ensure that the properties meet or exceed the standards on an ongoing basis.
  • Utilizing the property inspection checklist, perform weekly property inspections for each property under their responsibility as outlined in the Horticulture Property Inspection Guidelines.
  • Report findings from property inspections to the appropriate remedy resource and to their direct supervisor in writing and on a timely basis.
  • Ensure that any work outside the scope of normal landscape maintenance activity is submitted to and approved by Property Management before work is performed.
  • Communicate regularly with the Landscape Maintenance Director, Horticulture Director and appropriate property management personnel with regard to the condition of the property and any specific outstanding requests or tasks.
  • Participate as required with the Director Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance Director in customer connection meetings to gain a clear understanding of customer expectations.
  • Provide regular feedback to the crew about customer satisfaction, and crew performance to expectations.
  • Ensure that all equipment is maintained in safe working order and that broken, missing or defective equipment is reported to the Landscape Maintenance Director.
  • Provide feedback to the Director Landscape Maintenance and the Director Horticulture on the work performance of crew members.
  • Act as a working member of the crew, with the ability to provide tactical field direction to crew members relative to specific day to day tasks required to maintain the property.
  • Carrying heavy loads carefully, using power tools.
  • Cutting turf, trimming and edging along borders, and blowing using power equipment.
  • Pruning shrubs and low trees to improve the growth habit or remove damaged branches.
  • Planting and maintaining flower beds, and applying mulch.
  • Picking up trash and debris.
  • Performing weeding by hand or using a garden hoe or hula hoe or backpack spraying.
  • Using all required PPE for safety.
  • Maintaining a polite, friendly, responsive demeanor with other employees and perspective residents.
  • Be driven to learn proper landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Listen for instruction and have good communication with the direct landscape supervisor.
  • Ensuring all crew members perform their work safely and in accordance with company policies
  • Ensuring equipment is in good working order and receives appropriate preventative maintenance
  • Logging equipment usage and maintenance cycles

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work professionally with co-workers on the phone and in-person.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to take initiative, use good judgment, demonstrate a strong sense of urgency and attention to detail. and carry multiple projects through to completion.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritize work and ask for further clarification when necessary.
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight time constraints, as well as the ability to deal with frequent interruptions, unresolved situations, frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and work directly with landscape crew

Required Education And Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education And Experience

  • Any horticultural or agriculture degree/course work
  • Bilingual in Spanish highly regarded
  • Category 3 pesticide license helpful
