What are the responsibilities and job description for the Acid Utility (C) Operators position at Southern States Chemical, Inc.?
Southern States Chemical is the largest ISO 9001 Certified manufacturer and supplier of sulfuric acid for industrial use in the Southeastern United States. We serve our customers from the following production and terminal locations: Savannah, GA, Augusta, GA, Wilmington, NC, and Hopewell, Va.
We are currently hiring Acid Utility (C) Operators in our Augusta location. Their goal is to ensure the plant is operating within parameters of efficiency and safety while producing the highest quality, cost effective product.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Unload sulfur railcars.
- Unload soda ash railcars.
- Load sodium bisulfite tanker trucks.
- Accurately make batches of soda ash solution.
- Conduct thorough pre and post loading safety sheets utilizing the following documents: Rail Car Unloading Safety Checklist and Truck Loading Safety Checklist
- Make sure all loading and unloading equipment is in good working condition. Report any equipment deficiencies.
- Must be able to work scheduled 12-hr days with intermittent 14-16 hour days for emergency operations and repairs.
- Troubleshoot issues with production equipment and processes.
- Report safety issues and incidents in a timely manner.
- Work well with others to promote a strong teamwork environment.
- Document all necessary information on appropriate log.
- Obtain accurate samples from tanker trucks.
- Provide training for other operators as deemed appropriate.
- Safety operate rail moving equipment.
- Maintain a clean working environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Perform the above duties in a safe and professional manner.
- Adhere to ISO standards.
- Maintain good records of attendance and availability for extra duty.
- Work safe and incident free.
Physical Requirements of the Job:
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, poles and the like.
- Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
- Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Adjusting or moving objects up to 25 lbs. in all directions.
- Light work that includes moving objects up to 20 lbs.
- Repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.
- Communicating with others to exchange information.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, manufacturer's literature, diagrams, and schematics.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn and use the plant DCS control system as well as Microsoft Excel and Word as needed.
