What are the responsibilities and job description for the Materials Buyer position at Southern States Packaging Company?
Job Summary
This job requires an individual who is self-motivated and comfortable working in an entrepreneurial, efficiency-focused environment. The role involves working closely with production to ensure proper materials are on hand, while at the same time, working with suppliers to source quality materials at a competitive price. This position will report directly to the SSPC Purchasing Department.
Responsibilities
- Working with approved vendors to source materials for production, including, but not limited to, pallets, tape, and packaging materials
- Ensuring that the production plant has all necessary materials on hand to produce orders efficiently
- Developing near-term (4 to 6 week) forecasts for consumption of products
- Understanding supplier lead time and adjusting purchasing accordingly
- Actively working to promote improvements in efficiency throughout the plant
- Actively working to reduce total material expenses
- Working with vendors to track orders through delivery
- Check vendor order acknowledgements to locate and prevent discrepancies
- Locating potential vendors
- Periodically reviewing pricing with multiple vendors with the goal of reducing material costs
- Reporting all purchases to the Purchasing Department
- Coordinate die repairs and transportation of dies
- Working with the technology department to improve reporting and forecasting
- Communicating with customer service to keep them informed of updated Vendor delivery schedules
- Constantly work to promote an environment of continuous improvement
Scope and Impact on Others
Maintain flexible, positive and willing attitude along with open, professional communication with Manufacturing, Sales, Accounting, Customers, Suppliers, etc. to facilitate both the reduction in material costs and improvement in plant efficiency.
Qualifications and Skill Set
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, with a particular emphasis on Microsoft Excel
- A valid driver’s license
- Previous work experience in the fields Supply Chain Logistics or Procurement is preferred, but not required
