POSITION SUMMARY: This position provides clinical laboratory services for the Southern Ute Health Center.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs clinical laboratory services including phlebotomy, venipuncture, and capillary collection of blood samples.
2. Evaluates and selects reagents and supplies, establishes and maintains inventory control systems, and manages resources effectively.
3. Performs Hematology including complete blood count with indices, hematocrit, semen analysis, wet preps or wet mounts.
4. Performs Urinalysis studies including biochemical testing and microscopic analysis, HCGs.
5. Performs fecal studies including fecal occult blood testing.
6. Clinical specimen processing. Including: chemistry, glucose / glucose tolerance, creatinine, potassium, sodium chloride, TCO2, hemoglobin A1C.
7. Establishes and implements specimen collection and preparation procedures.
8. Performs routine and specialized laboratory tests; reports result’s and consults with physicians on additional tests that may be useful or necessary to clarify problems. Sends specimens out for testing to contract and state laboratories.
9. Conducts quality control procedures on equipment, reagents, and products by designing and implementing instrument, reagent, and product check systems.
10. Provides training and instructions of non-laboratory personnel in laboratory protocols and procedures for limited routine tests.
11. Ensures that laboratory services comply with the established standards and requirements.
12. Establishes a preventive maintenance program for all instruments. Calibrates and standardizes equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and makes simple repairs or identifies need for external services.
13. Maintains current laboratory and radiology policies and procedures.
14. Reviews laboratory test results, enters the clinical test results into the clinical informatics systems/electronic health records, and distributes the results to the appropriate clinical personnel.
15. Maintains an external proficiency testing program for all regulated analyses that meets national accreditation standards.
16. Responsible for maintaining COLA laboratory accreditation.
17. Plans and carries out laboratory services as necessary to perform specific analyses, preserve stock cultures, and prepare reagents.
18. Packages and refers clinical test procedures that are not performed in-house to reference laboratories.
19. Develops guidelines, including quality control standards, procedures, and parameters for instrument performance with each new test or instrument.
20. Researches, tests, and implements new laboratory and radiology procedures and equipment.
21. Ensures that policies and procedures and safety practices are effectively followed.
22. Shows sensitivity to cross-cultural and language differences of the various patients served.
23. Demonstrates age specific competency in working with Infants, Toddlers, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatric patients.
24. Actively participates on appropriate committees (i.e. quality management and improvement, etc.).
25. Performs other work-related duties when required or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Must have 4 years of experience performing Point of Care testing.
Must have 4 years of experience performing laboratory services including phlebotomy, venipuncture, and capillary collection of blood samples.
Must obtain certification in basic life support and cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) within 30 days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
Must have knowledge of quality control, workload reporting, and proficiency testing programs is required to assure the reliability of data and measure laboratory productivity.
Must have experience in operating and maintaining laboratory instruments.
Must have experience evaluating new laboratory tests and instruments and modifying and adapting standard methods and procedures consistent with a small-lab approach.
Must have knowledge and experience working in accordance with of the Privacy Act of 1974, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Must provide current immunization records or obtain required immunizations at the Tribal Health Center prior to starting work in order to meet regulations required for all clinical providers.
Must provide recent TB test results or be able to obtain a TB test at the Tribal Health Center prior to starting work.
Must have computer operation experience to accurately enter patient data and draft reports and correspondence.
Must have a valid Driver’s License for state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal Vehicle Insurance Policy.
Must pass a thorough criminal history background check, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug test.
