POSITION SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of Chief Probation Officer & Court Administrator represents the Tribal Court in a positive and professional manner in the provision of probation counseling to Tribal Members.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Testifies in court at review, sentencing, and revocation hearings.
2. Prepares and submits pre-sentence investigations and makes recommendations for sentencing to the Court, prosecution, and defense.
3. Supervises, monitors, and documents the adult’s or juvenile’s performance of the conditions imposed by the court through visits to the home, school, workplace, treatment center and office appointments.
4. Independently gathers information from schools, social agencies, law enforcement, treatment facilities, victim services programs, victim panels, and restitution programs to verify compliance by the adult or juvenile with the court’s order.
5. Creates and maintains individual files on all criminal and juvenile cases, following the standards and procedures of the probation manual.
6. Administers random tests for illegal drugs and alcohol. Maintains the chain of custody; obtains the test results; collects and accounts for the required fee from the adult or juvenile.
7. Assists the adults or juveniles in finding opportunities to fulfill community service requirements.
8. Works closely with the office of the prosecutor in instances requiring the revocation of a sentence or deferred sentence.
9. Cooperates with law enforcement agencies, courts and social services agencies on referrals for services with prior court difficulties, alcohol and/or drug abuse and when third party causative factors have been identified, in order to stabilize and improve family and/or individual functioning.
10. Handles any special projects assigned by the Chief Probation Officer.
11. Recommends and implements improvements on current probation service methods utilizing the current service providers.
12. Attends training as required or requested.
13. May be required to work after hours to conduct home and community contact visits, make employment verifications, conduct bar checks and handle emergency calls.
14. Performs other duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have an AA in Law Enforcement, Sociology, Psychology, or related field and 1 year of experience in probation or law enforcement; OR 3 years of experience in probation, law enforcement or case management.
Must have knowledge of criminal justice concepts.
Must have knowledge of Tribal, State and Federal court systems.
Must be available on a 24-hour on call basis for emergencies.
Must sign confidentiality agreement.
Must not have any open, on-going, or pending cases with the Southern Ute Indian Tribal Court.
Must have a valid Driver’s License for state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy.
Must pass a thorough background check including Criminal History, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug test.
