Job Overview:
The Peer Recovery Specialist’s role is to support others in recovery from a substance use disorder. The Peer Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. The Peer Specialist must demonstrate an ability to share personal recovery experiences, to instill hope, and to develop authentic peer-to-peer relationships. The Peer Recovery Specialist will serve as a member of the interdisciplinary New Day Recovery team and provide support to the peer recovery center. The CEO/Executive Director and the Governing Board reserve the right to adjust schedules and transfer any staff member within the organization, at any time for the benefit of our patients and the overall operations of Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Inc.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Be a healthy recovery mentor and role model to support patients in their recovery journeys.
- Supervise patients in the Peer Recovery Center and maintain the environment to provide a safe, hope filled and non-judgmental space for patients.
- Provide peer recovery services and education to patients and families in both group and individual formats.
- Assist patients in identifying personal interests, goals, strengths and weaknesses to develop an individualized recovery plan.
- Facilitate patient transition from professionally assisted recovery to self-directed and community supported recovery maintenance including promoting self-advocacy.
- Collaborate with other New Day Recovery staff to maintain and develop relationships and linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural and spiritual resources as well as mutual self-help groups, professional services, etc.) that address patients’ social determinants of health, personal interests, and professional resources.
- Provide transportation for patients who have none to access community resources that support healthy recovery.
- Provide support to new referrals to enter treatment and stay engaged.
- Document all activities conducted for patients in the electronic health record.
- Follows confidentiality laws and policies.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Locations: Provides patient care at all SVCHS locations to include Saltville Community Health Center, Meadowview Community Health Center, Bristol Community Health Center, Tazewell Community Health Center, New Day Recovery/SVCHS, and Southwest Virginia Regional Dental Center. Patient care may also be provided offsite at skilled nursing facilities in addition to home visits for non-ambulatory patients.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2 years of Healthy Recovery
- Valid driver’s license
- Acquired or in process of acquiring Certified Peer Specialist qualifications
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting
- Working knowledge of SUD and MH treatment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to recovery and the recovery community
- Computer experience and comfort with data entry and analysis
- Basic knowledge of mental health and substance abuse disorders
- Knowledge of community resources and referral processes.
- Ability to use independent judgment and manage confidential information.
