Position: Controls Department Manager
Location: Grand Rapids, MI
Overview
The Controls Department Manager is responsible for planning, managing, and executing all aspects of controls installation for packaging equipment, while leading a team of engineers and technicians. This role ensures efficient project execution, adherence to safety standards, and continuous process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop Controls Technicians and Engineers in a collaborative environment.
- Establish and uphold engineering standards for all controls-related work.
- Promote cross-department collaboration to improve workflow and efficiency.
- Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and performance management of team members.
Project & Resource Management
- Work closely with the Mechanical Installation Manager to optimize installations, including resource allocation, scheduling, and execution.
- Coordinate with the Mechanical Engineering Manager to ensure seamless integration of mechanical and electrical designs.
- Allocate appropriate controls resources to meet project demands related to safety, quality, and timelines.
- Develop project budgets in collaboration with Project Managers to maximize profitability and track costs using EPICOR.
- Ensure installation teams have all necessary documentation, hardware, software, and equipment.
- Maintain an updated status report on all ongoing controls projects.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce customer safety standards for all onsite installations.
- Ensure team members have up-to-date safety training.
- Monitor installations to meet all relevant safety, quality, and compliance standards.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and profitability.
- Develop and maintain departmental KPIs to track performance and drive success.
- Create and execute training programs for Controls Installers/Technicians.
- Foster a culture of open communication, accountability, and professional growth.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist Project Managers in defining installation scope and schedules.
- Ensure smooth communication and coordination of project needs with installation crews.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience & Technical Skills
- 5 years of experience in industrial installations, electrical/controls engineering, or construction management with a focus on controls systems.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- MS Office Suite, MS Project, AutoCAD
- PLC programming
- Controls hardware & software
- Previous management experience preferred.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
