What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Coder position at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System?
Position Summary
The Senior Coder is responsible for the coding and abstracting of a variety of patient types. (IP, OBV, OPS, ER, IR, Endo etc.) . This is accomplished by using the 3M 360 Encompass program in associated with EPIC. The senior coder may also be responsible for the charging of certain revenue codes on designated patient types. The Senior Coder works with providers to ensure documentation is clear and concise in order to support the coding and charging. Compliant queries are written to providers if needed which become part of the legal medical record.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- HS Diploma
Experience
- Will take new graduates from HIM technical colleges with RHIT and train
License/Registration/Certifications
- N/A
Preferred Requirements
Preferred Education
- Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree in HIM or related Health care field
Preferred Experience
- 3-5 Years of experience at tertiary teaching acute care hospital
Preferred License/Registration/Certifications
- RHIT, CPC or RN
Core Job Responsibilities
- Thoroughly reviews provider documentation and assigns ICD 10, ICD 10 PCS, and or CPT codes to assigned patient types
- Accurately abstracts above records for required data elements to be used for research, billing and reimbursement.
- knowledge of APR DRG, MS DRG, or APC grouping classification systems
- Ensures accurate SOI, ROM, HCC assignment
- Writes compliant and effective queries as needed
- Assigns charge codes to certain revenue codes
- Assists with training/mentoring new associates as needed
- Teamwork and being a highly engaged associate
- Achieves all the above while maintaining established productivity and accuracy goals
- Other duties as assigned
