Job Description Summary
Advocates Assisting Students with Disabilities (AASD) has a part-time job opening (with possibility of becoming full-time) for a Special Education Advocate in Hattiesburg, MS and in Jackson, MS and the surrounding areas. The Advocate will represent and advocate on behalf of students with disabilities (kindergarten through high school) in IEP meetings in the public schools.
Primary Responsibilities
- Review students’ school records and evaluations
- Correspond with school district employees
- Advocate for students with disabilities at IEP meetings for appropriate educational services
- Manage multiple cases at a time under supervision of attorney
- Keep detailed records in case management system
Qualifications
- BA degree required, preferably in education or special education
- Knowledge of special education and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
- Experience working with students who have dyslexia, autism or emotional disturbance eligibility rulings preferred
- At least 3 years of experience attending IEP meetings
- Must be available 3 days per week and 4 hours per day during business hours
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Strongly support SEAS’ mission to ensure students with disabilities have an opportunity to receive appropriate special education services in the least restrictive environment
Salary: Beginning salary is $25 per hour.
