Position Title: Development Director

Special Olympics Utah provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. We aim to provide continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate
courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendships with their families, other
Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Position Summary: The Development Director will play a crucial role in advancing the mission of Special
Olympics Utah by leading the organization's fundraising and development activities. This position is
responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all Special Olympics Utah’s fundraising, including individual
giving, special events, and corporate and foundation support. The Development Director will work closely
with the President & CEO, the Senior Director of Operations, and the Board of Directors.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy and Implementation:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet annual and long-term financial goals.
- Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, corporations, foundations, and other stakeholders.
- Identify and pursue new funding opportunities.
- Individual Giving and Donor Relations:
- Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.
- Develop and execute strategies for donor engagement and recognition.
- Conduct donor research and prepare proposals and presentations.
Special Events:
- Plan, organize, and execute fundraising events.
- Work with event committees and volunteers to ensure successful events.
Communications and Public Relations:
- Collaborate with the department leadership to create fundraising materials and campaigns.
- Represent Special Olympics Utah at community events and speaking engagements.
Leadership and Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Board of Directors to engage them in fundraising activities.
- Collaborate with program staff to align fundraising efforts with organizational needs and priorities.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising and development, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Proven track record of successfully raising funds through individual gifts, grants, and events.
- Strong understanding of fundraising principles, ethics, and best practices.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
- Experience with donor management software and fundraising databases.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for the mission of Special Olympics Utah and a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
