The production technician is responsible for the general safe operation, adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and overall productivity of multiple machines. This position requires the person be able to effectively troubleshoot complex machine problems as well as rapidly address routine issues and tasks to ensure machine up-time is maximized throughout the work centers and efficiencies are met while maintaining expected quality and safety standards.
Role and Responsibilities
Role: The areas a production technician must be proficient in include, but are not limited to; machine operation (including rear and front end set-up and troubleshooting), maintaining speed and up-time on multiple machines, performing roll changes, clearing paper jams, pulling die heads (including associated paperwork), replacing knives and rubbers, shimming heads for levelness, operating print stations, completing print station set ups, maintaining glue assemblies, gathering supplies for the team including but not limited to ink, bags, labels, and boxes, also tracking box counts, number of roll changes, and downtime for daily paperwork, troubleshooting of poor quality dishes with proper corrective actions, training and support for both fellow technicians and packers, ability to understand the production schedule, able to effectively communicate and work as a team, as well as ability to communicate with the group lead and shift supervisor. The position also entails general housekeeping duties throughout and at the end of the shift and, when smooth operation is in progress, watching for general quality issues and assisting in packing product to maximize productivity of the line.
Daily Responsibilities:
- Comply and follow SQP’s food safety and workplace safety policies
- Comply with good manufacturing practices as required
- Ensure that all safety guards are in place
- Check product quality at each machine such as glue, knife cutting, print, and tray forming correctly
- Strict adherence to established processes such as, head pulls, printer and roll changeovers, etc.
- Ensure equipment is performing to standard expectations for speed and up-time to maximize efficiency
- Check the most current production schedule per machine to ensure proper BOMs (including paper rolls already dropped behind each machine)
- Coordinate priorities and prep for changeovers with other technicians, group leads, and shift supervisors
- Troubleshoot and fix issues with the machines (including basic paper jams) then restart and monitor
- Notify group lead and/or shift supervisor regarding any downtime which cannot be clearly diagnosed
- Clean glue heads and assemblies as required for functionality
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining of neat work area
- Communicate with outgoing shift regarding any pertinent safety , quality and production issues
- Complete any paperwork assigned (head pull sheets, downtime tracking, etc.)
- Training Junior technicians as production technician back up
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Stock cases, labels and bags for packers
- Open and prep rolls for upcoming roll changes
- Provide guidance to packers
- Relieves packers and techs for breaks and lunches
- Training of packers in their job duties
Qualifications
- Machine operator experience in a repetitive manufacturing environment is a plus
- Mechanical aptitude; skills include, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, troubleshooting and repair of production machines
- Must be capable of climbing ladders and/or stairs
- Ability to stand for an 8 – 12 hour shift
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds throughout the day
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, repetitive and team oriented environment
- Perform basic visual quality inspection of finished goods
- Must be capable of cleaning with chemicals using protective gear
- 1st shift (7 am - 3:30 pm), 2nd shift (3 pm – 11:30 pm) has a $1.50 differential and 3rd shift (11 pm – 7:30 am) has a $2.00 differential
