Position Summary
The Community Service Coordinator in the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement at Spelman College is a key contributor to the institution’s commitment to community service, civic engagement, and social responsibility. Operating within the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement, the Coordinator has the exciting opportunity to exercise creativity and initiative in planning, organizing, and implementing community-based programs and activities. The coordinator will shape impactful service opportunities in alignment with the missions of the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement, The Division of Student Affairs and Spelman College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development:
- Designs and executes innovative community service programs and initiatives that align with Spelman College’s values and objectives.
- Identifies community needs and develops projects that foster student engagement and address those needs effectively.
Student Empowerment and Support:
- Guides development of 2nd year Bonner Scholars by:
- Conducting bi-weekly check-in meetings to assess student progress with classes, service, and social emotional well-being
- Ensures student completion of Bonner Developmental model sophomore milestones:
- Monitors student academic progress on Spelman ARCH
- Completes 280 hours of community service (140/semester)
- Participates in Weekly Class Meetings/ Monthly Bonner Leadership Summits
- Completes Summer of Service (280 hours w/ non-profit or government agency)
- Participates in Sophomore Exchange
- Empowers and mentors student volunteers, including Bonner Scholars and other participants, fostering an environment of leadership and ownership in community projects.
- Provides personalized support to students, encouraging their autonomy in driving the success of their service initiatives.
Streamlined Event Planning and Logistics:
- Coordinates logistics for community service events, including transportation, materials, and volunteer schedules.
- Ensures adherence to safety protocols and compliance with college policies during all service activities.
Data-Driven Autonomy:
- Implements systems for independent tracking and documentation of service hours, participant engagement, and community impact.
- Generates insightful reports on the outcomes and effectiveness of community service initiatives, demonstrating accountability and initiative.
Training and Development:
- Designs and facilitates training sessions for student volunteers, focusing on ethical community engagement, cultural competence, and leadership development.
- Provides ongoing personal and professional development for student leaders within the community service program.

Strategic Partnership Building:
- Establishes and nurtures strong relationships with community organizations, nonprofits, and local agencies
- Diversifies and enhances the range and impact of community service opportunities.
Collaboration with Stakeholders:
- Collaborates with other campus departments, faculty, and student organizations, actively contributing to the integration of community service into the broader student experience.
- Represents the Bonner Office of Civic Engagement at relevant campus and community meetings/events.
Budget Management:
- Contributes to the development and management of the community service budget, ensuring responsible use of resources.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required, preferably in community service, coordination, program development or related roles. Master’s degree a plus. The incumbent must have excellent organizational and programming skills; interpersonal and customer service skills; and oral and written communication skills.
Must effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups of students, employees, community partners and the public in one-on-one or groups settings. Incumbent must be able to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals. Duties require the ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Must be detail oriented.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) to prepare correspondence, reports, memos, and e-mails plus things such as mail merges, flyers, spreadsheets containing formulas, and creating forms.
