Electric Service/Meter Technician

Spencer Municipal Utilities (“SMU”) is a secure, well-financed municipally owned utility provider that has proudly met the electric and water needs of local Spencer, Iowa residents since 1942. Telecommunication service offerings were added to the service mix in 1997, and today SMU provides the residential and business community with a full range of voice, video, and data services.

SMU is actively seeking applicants for a full-time Electric Service/Meter Technician. The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated individual responsible for consulting and working with utility residential/business customers & electricians with the installation, testing and maintenance of all electric metering and other customer power needs. This position will assist the electric department crews and will be working with energized secondary phase voltages of 120v to 600v and de-energized primary voltages of 601v to 69kv Wye & Delta. Responsible for maintenance and troubleshooting of city streetlights. Position also assists with using electrical/technical equipment to accurately locate underground facilities including, electric power lines, water lines, telephone, cable television and fiber optic lines. This position is non-exempt and will have on-call responsibilities reporting to the Electric Department Manager.

Qualified candidates should have a High School diploma/GED. Iowa Journeyman Electrician License with a strong electrical work experience background is preferred. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) combination with Air Brakes within 60 days of employment.

Our Requirements:

· High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent

·Graduation from an accredited vocational school, supplemented by courses in electrical metering maintenance or electrical theory or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

· Iowa Journeyman Electrician License

·A strong set of communications and interpersonal skills that are equally effective with staff, management, customers and various departments with the City of Spencer

· Basic to intermediate experience with Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams, PowerPoint, Access, and SharePoint is desired.

·Required to possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license and meet SMU insurability requirements

. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) combination with Air Brakes within 60 days of employment.

·Residency requirement to reside within a 30-minute response time to the office
