RATE OF PAY: $19.09 - $20.64 / PER HOUR

INTRODUCTION:
The Water & Fish Technician I will assist with stream bank stabilization projects, riparian planting and watering and aid in stream habitat and fisheries surveys. The Technician will use computer programs, GPS units and other equipment needed to collect data, monitor stream habitat and water quality, prepare analysis, and complete other projects as assigned.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist the NPS Project Manager in stream restoration projects by planting trees and shrubs, fencing, and working with heavy equipment.
• Assist the NPS Project Manager in maintaining stream restoration projects by clearing invasive plant species, as well as watering and installing/maintaining protectors on trees and shrubs.
• Collecting stream habitat and fish data using water flow meters, gathering water quality samples, collecting fish using backpack electro fishers, traps, etc.
• Calibrating and using water quality instruments.
• Organizing and entering data into the computer on MS Excel or other programs
• Working from and operating boats to collect fisheries and water quality data.
• Equipment/vehicle maintenance (ATV’s, chainsaws, boats, pumps, trailers, etc.)
• Be able to locate specific locations on the ground using topographic maps.
• Other duties as assigned, which may include working with other related departments/ programs
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on back (electro shocker) or a 5-gallon bucket of water
• Ability to swim
• Ability to identify local fish species.
• Ability to locate locations using a topographic map.
• Ability to work alone or as a team.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• High school diploma/GED
• Driver's license and good driving record for insurance purposes
• Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on back (electro shocker) or a 5-gallon bucket of water
• Must be able to swim
• Must be able to read maps and locate locations using a topographic map.
• Must have knowledge of and experience in operating tools and equipment (hammers, t-post pounder, wire cutters, power tools, etc.)
PREFERRED REQUISITES:
• Basic vehicle mechanics.
• Computer experience (Excel).
• Experience in boat operation.
• Ability to identify local fish species.
• Experience in habitat survey methods.
• Experience in fish survey methods.
• Experience in habitat restoration.
