General Statement of Job
This is a Part-Time position for 26 hours per week.
Provides case management services to CHINS youth (Child in Need of Services, Truancy, or Runaway). Work is performed under direct supervision of the 15th District Court Service Unit Supervisor.
Special Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides intake services by reviewing CHINS intakes, collecting information, and determining the appropriate course of action in accordance with established policies, procedures, and the Virginia Code.
- Conducts risk assessments for youth and their family. Assist families and youth by collaboratively creating goals and case plans. Advises families and youth of community resources and make appropriate referrals as needed.
- Provides a variety of case management services to include routine visits with youth and their family. Conducts monthly treatment team meetings to evaluate the youth’s progress.
- Prepares and maintains auditable and confidential case files and records for all youth under their supervision. Maintains accurate up-to-date records of all assessments, plans, interventions, youth/family involvement, outside agency communication, and other contacts. Writes concise, accurate and organized progress notes and other case documentation. Prepares required documents, to include court reports, and other materials as needed.
- Develops and maintains and in-depth knowledge of departmental policies, state laws, and procedures as they relate to the job duties.
- Serves as a representative of the Court Service Unit at all CHINS hearings held by the Spotsylvania Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court.
- Serves as a representative of the Court Service Unit at the Spotsylvania Multi-Disciplinary Team, which reviews school related concerns for youth.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with law enforcement, school officials, the juvenile court and various community agencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Training & Experience
High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in criminal justice, social work, or a related field accepted in lieu of education.
Must possess and maintain a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license. Must clear the mandatory criminal background check, CPS background check and driving record check.
Special Requirements

- General knowledge of the techniques and means of interviewing, assessing, and investigating.
- General knowledge of casework methods and crisis intervention techniques, such as behavior management, family education, case planning, and service coordination.
- Knowledge of residential and group home placements, as well as an understanding that least restrictive, community based, settings best meet the needs of children and families.
- Ability to coordinate service delivery to be child centered and family focused.
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with the children, families, and their support system.
- Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently, performing position duties under general supervision.
- Ability to write and speak effectively. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with service providers and stakeholders.
