Spread the Word Nevada was formed in February 2001 by Co-Founders Laurie Hartig and Lisa Habighorst.
Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing early childhood literacy by placing books into the homes of children within Nevada's at-risk, low-income communities. Through community collaboration, mentorship, and family partnership programs, Spread the Word Nevada fosters reading and language development opportunities, ultimately leading to brighter academic and economic futures for these children. Programs include the Kids-to-Kids program, the Family Literacy program, the Books & Buddies program, and the Readers in Training program. Currently, the Organization's programs are being implemented, supported, and utilized throughout a continuously growing number of elementary schools and partner organizations throughout the State of Nevada.

Position Summary
The Volunteer Assistant's primary role will be to support STWN's Volunteer Book Prep initiatives as assigned. These duties include (but are not limited to) serving as the staff lead to facilitate and supervise volunteers during Book Prep sessions, implementing fun and unique activities for the Book Prep session as assigned by the Volunteer Asst Manager/Volunteer Manager, reporting metrics from volunteer Book Prep sessions, organizing and maintaining the volunteer room and Book Prep supplies, assisting the Volunteer Asst Manager in maintaining the Volunteer Book Prep calendar, and other duties as assigned. This position will be responsible for not only organizing and overseeing these events but also infusing them with enthusiasm to make them enjoyable, engaging, and a positive reflection of STWN.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand frequently, walk frequently, sit, use hands and fingers to point, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, and lift up to 25 pounds. The vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to excessive heat, wet and/or humid outside conditions. Due to working in the office, warehouse, and/or school setting, the noise level in the environment is moderate to high.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
- Lead assigned Volunteer Book Prep sessions, ensuring an efficient and enjoyable experience for participants (this includes setting up and cleaning of the volunteer room)
- Assist the Volunteer Department in executing creative and engaging activities to make Book Preps enjoyable, fostering a positive and welcoming atmosphere
- Maintain an accurate count of Book Prep inventory and inform the Volunteer Asst Manager when supplies are running low
- Coordinate Volunteer Book Prep check-in
- Report on attendance at Volunteer Book Preps
- Provide tours of STWN facility as needed, ensuring the organization's purpose is appropriately conveyed to the public
- Maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming workspace/volunteer room for volunteers
- Play a pivotal role in creating a positive atmosphere that encourages volunteers to return regularly
- Assist with volunteer appreciation and recognition events/activities
- Assist with follow-up thank you emails to volunteers - including thank you notes to groups with a picture of their participation with STWN
- Assist with volunteer database upkeep
- Assist with sending weekly reminder emails to volunteers
- Assist with preparing off-site book prep materials
- Assist with off-site tabling events
- Assist in recruiting volunteers
- Other duties may be assigned at the discretion of the Volunteer Assistant Manager/Volunteer Manager or that are related to the fundamental aspects of the Volunteer Assistant position.
- High School Diploma Required
- College Degree Preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and encourage others
- Must be comfortable speaking to large groups of people
- Good time-management skills
- Ability to lift to 30 lbs.
- Must have good computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency
- Valid Nevada State Drivers' License
- Able to obtain a driving record
