POSITION SUMMARY
Automotive Mechanic performs vehicle repairs and maintenance and is responsible for the inspection, maintenance and repair of all Township automotive vehicles and equipment. Assignments are completed in accordance with standard automotive trade practices. May direct other personnel when requiring assistance in performing maintenance and repair functions. Performs assignments independently and under the general direction of a Superintendent, Director or other designated Township official. Ensures that all transactions with peers and the public are handled in a professional and courteous manner.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Inspects, troubleshoots, tests and repairs trucks, automobiles, tractors and their related electrical, mechanical, HVAC and hydraulic appurtenances.
- Performs Pennsylvania State inspection on Township vehicle fleet.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, tests and repairs automotive components, equipment and systems.
- Performs emergency road service.
- Maintains Township vehicle fleet maintenance servicing records.
- Maintains Township vehicle fleet inventory of repair parts.
- Operates snowplow and other highway equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work in a safe manner and encourage the same from co-workers.
- Thorough knowledge of safety standards and procedures in a public works environment.
- Thorough knowledge of Springettsbury Township department rules and procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of the operation of combustion engines.
- Considerable knowledge in inspecting, testing and repairing automotive equipment and systems and component parts.
- Considerable knowledge in automotive hydraulic systems.
- Considerable knowledge in automotive HVAC systems.
- Considerable knowledge in the care and safe operation of automobiles and trucks.
- Considerable knowledge in the use and care of tools and equipment.
- Ability to install snow plows on vehicles.
- Ability to install and operate salt spreading and de-icing equipment.
- Ability to operate loader in an efficient manner to load salt and anti-skid material.
- Ability to perform independently and lead small groups of associates.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of all work performed and submit reports and summaries when required.
- Ability and willingness to participate in work planning.
- Ability to understand, communicate and carry out written and verbal instructions effectively in English.
- Ability to adhere to safety standards and recognize safety warnings and hazards.
- Ability to climb, stand, stoop, bend and lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) over an extended period of time.
- Ability to report for on-call services.
- Attends all general training as required.
- Ability to regularly report to the job at the assigned times and perform assigned duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Five years experience as an automotive and heavy equipment mechanic.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brakes and tanker endorsement within 12 months of employment. Failure to obtain this license will automatically result in release from employment.
- Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Certified Inspection Mechanic License, Class 7 within 12 months of employment. Failure to obtain this license will automatically result in release from employment.
- Preferred Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent certification in the following areas:
- Engine Repair
- Manual Drive Train and Axles
- Electronic System
- Suspension
- Brakes
- HVAC
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to provide own tools (see attached listing of Tools Required to be Provided by Automotive Mechanic).
- Ability to pass physical/medical tests, including functionality test.
- Ability to pass drug-screening test.
- Ability to pass psychological exam.
- Ability to pass background investigation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work is in an industrial setting, indoors and outdoors, hot and cold areas and subject to extreme, arduous, or hazardous working conditions, including subject to untreated wastewaters.
- Subject to heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under adverse conditions, both physical and climatic.
- Work is performed around a variety of potentially hazardous mechanical and electrical equipment and occasionally around hazardous substances.
- Subject to entry into confined spaces.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays or after normal work hours in emergency situations.
