Job Summary:
As a School Nurse, the ideal candidate will provide students with school health services and function collaboratively with the Building Principal as well as the other school nurses to promote a healthy school environment. Strong organizational and documentation skills are necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.
- Oversee, prevent, prepare and respond to all building level health related matters.
- Works closely with government agencies, Building Principal, nurse secretary, and other school nurses to coordinate all building level health related matters.
- Assist in the development and implementation of health and safety protocols for the district in response to health emergencies.
- Attend District Team meetings and building level team meetings when needed.
- Support the Building Principal in communication to faculty, staff, parents/families and the community regarding current guidance and protocols related to health issues.
- Assist with recovery plan(s) for staff and students.
- Collaborate with Business Office, AOE and VDH to manage and order supplies.
- Support all students, including those with special needs, underlying medical conditions, and those experiencing homelessness.
Areas of student health care responsibilities include:
- Assessment
- First Aid
- Medication administration
- Provides communicable disease control procedures and advises administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and re-admittance
- Immunization assessment
- Assessment and care of students with special needs
- Participates in the development of Individual Education Plans
- Collaborates with appropriate professionals in the evaluation and management of children with physical, social, learning, and emotional problems.
- Manages Medical 504 plans and coordinates yearly meetings with families and staff
- Insures follow-up of physician order, and delivers other care as needed (e.g., administration of medication)
- Provides emergency health care services
Additional areas of responsibilities include:
- Compilation of statistical information
- Maintenance of health and medication records/logs
- Accident reporting
- Updating student health emergency information
- Coordinates the Dental Health Program and School Based Clinic with NorthStar Health
- Provides in-service training for health-related issues as indicated
- Interprets the health and development assessment to parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals
- Provides health counseling to students, parents, and school personnel as appropriate
- Assists in planning curriculum for health education
- Acts as a resource person and consultant for health education in the classroom setting.
- Monitors, reports and recommend district changes for safety hazards and sanitary conditions in the environment
