Springfield Technical Community College invites applications for the next Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LAPS). The division offers 18 degree and certificate programs. Given STCC's technical mission, service departments housed in LAPS play a critical role in providing General Education courses for the College's School of Health and Patient Simulation (SHPS) and School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The Dean of LAPS oversees STCC's Early Childhood Education Career Pathways program funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. STCC regularly hosts art exhibitions on campus at the Amy H. Carberry Fine Arts Gallery and presents a theatrical production each semester through its College Theater Workshop.

Working with and under the supervision of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (the College's Chief Academic Officer), the Dean is responsible for the overall leadership of the School and its operations while ensuring excellence in the delivery of courses, programs, and initiatives resulting in graduates who are well prepared for transfer and/or career opportunities. The Dean will exercise leadership in service to student success and the mission of the College, with a focus on responsible stewardship of resources and quality instruction. In leading LAPS, the Dean will work to achieve goals outlined in the College's Momentum 2023-2028 Strategic Plan. The Dean will also support the College's academic program review and curriculum development processes.

Given the Springfield region's demographic diversity and the College's status as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), the Dean will demonstrate a strong commitment to the value of recruiting faculty and staff that reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the community. The Dean will work closely with faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of inclusivity and respect.

Management

In particular, under the supervision of the Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA), and consistent with the College's Strategic Plan, the Dean will:

  • Work with department and program chairs to develop, implement, and revise curricula that align with the labor market and/or requirements for transfer.
  • Facilitate and manage assessment of student learning within the Division through academic program review and contribute to institutional assessment practices that lead to student-centered and equity-minded change.
  • Annually ensure that academic departments provide input into the appointment of a department chairperson in accordance with procedures specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Conduct division/department head meetings as required.
  • Collaborate with other divisions and outside agencies or institutions as appropriate on matters related to the division.

Curriculum

  • Ensure effective functioning of academic program advisory committees for each academic department.
  • In alignment with Academic Affairs priorities and under the direction of the VPAA, assume administrative responsibility for long-range curriculum planning within the division.
  • In consultation with program chairs and the VPAA, establish course offerings and teaching assignments by semester (Master Schedule).

Personnel, Facilities, And Fiscal

  • Prepare evaluations of and make recommendations on division personnel as specified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Mediate faculty/student grievances within the division when necessary based on contractual provisions and college policies.
  • Forward recommendations on department instructional space needs to the VPAA.
  • Submit proposed annual budget for the division to the VPAA.
  • Monitor budgets and work with the VPAA to ensure fiscally responsible, student-centered decisions.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform special projects and other related duties as initiated and requested by the VPAA.
  • Represent the VPAA and the Division of Academic Affairs on ad hoc and shared governance committees.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Directly supervise the activities and performance of all faculty and staff in the division.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees.
  • Appraise performance and participate in the discipline process consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree.
  • Full-time teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher education.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of higher education experience, including active and formal leadership related to areas such as curriculum development, assessment, and department administration.
  • A commitment to the mission of a diverse community college, with experience in promoting principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education principles and practices, assessment, shared governance, and curriculum development.
  • Data fluency and a willingness and ability to partner with the Office of Institutional Research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or other terminal degree in a field within the liberal arts, social sciences, or professional studies.
  • 3 years or more of higher education administrative leadership at the department chair level or higher at a community college.
  • 3 years or more of full-time teaching experience at an accredited institution of higher education.

Additional Information

Salary: $120,000 - $128,000 annually, commensurate with relevant higher education experience.
