What are the responsibilities and job description for the Beer Category Manager position at Sprouts Farmers Market?
The Category Manager (CM) is responsible for developing and executing strategies to maximize the performance of the department. This role requires an understanding of market trends, consumer preferences, and supplier relationships to drive sales, optimize inventory, and enhance the customer experience. Furthermore, the CM plans and executes all aspects of product development policies, programs, objectives, and initiatives with oversight from the Director of Beer/Wine. The CM is accountable for achieving sales/margin goals, researching new products and product enhancements that meet the expectations of Sprouts minimum standards. The CM analyzes past buying trends, sales records, price, and quality of merchandise to determine assortment.
Overview of Responsibilities
- Develop and achieve budget, sales, gross margins, and profit goals for the category
- Identify growth opportunities within the category and develop actionable plans
- Review all weekly, monthly, and quarterly trends to inform decision making
- Develop category strategies that keep Sprouts on the cutting edge of the industry
- Regularly incorporate new products into the overall product mix while removing underperformers
- Create and present regular updates on category performance to senior management
- Maintain awareness of Sprouts marketing strategies and competitive activity
- Oversee all category marketing plans and ads, including weekly flyer, monthly promotions, e-comm, etc.
- Establish retail and promotional pricing on a regional and national basis to meet budgetary goals
- Ensure that all federal, state, and company regulations and standards are met
- Help outline and follow Sprouts standards for all products carried in the department and assure that vendor products meet those standards on quality and value
- Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships
- Partner with sales, marketing, and operations teams to ensure cohesive execution of category strategies
- Respond to vendor/customer issues as needed on a timely basis
- Coordinate and source vendor participation for new store openings and resets
- Support and act as a liaison between Sprouts stores and vendors to assure quality products and department standards are being delivered
- Provide the stores with relevant data to make informed decisions about the department and how to maximize profitability
- Develop and communicate easy to use weekly merchandising plans and directives for merchandiser and store use

Qualifications
- Preferred Bachelor’s Degree in Business or related field with a minimum of three to five (3-5) years of departmental experience, with experience as Merchandiser or Manager preferred
- Requires long-term strategic and financial planning skills
- Previous buying/negotiating experience required
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and the Internet
- Ability to preserve confidentiality of information, communicate with all levels of management and work within strict time frames and resolute deadlines
- General understanding of P/L statements, general ledgers, and margins
- Some travel required
