What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chief of Staff position at SquarePeg?
We are a venture-backed, seed-stage B2B SaaS startup at the forefront of the Future of Work, with an established product in the market serving over 50 customers. This year we raised a fresh round of capital to bring a brand new AI product to market. We are looking for a Chief of Staff in Utah to help on all things finance, ops, and everything else that goes along with running a startup. This is a fantastic opportunity to join an AI tech startup from the ground up (under 20 people) as we scale operations. You will be working directly with the CEO and leadership on a daily basis. Working as a Chief of Staff at a tech company will give you exposure to every aspect of operations, sales, product, engineering, and how to run a startup. This is a fantastic career opportunity for someone who'd like to be in an ops leadership role one day (COO, CFO, etc).
About you:
About you:
- You are impatient and like to see things get done quickly
- You are a systems thinker, and love breaking down problems into their component parts, fixing them, and building systems for better handling in the future
- You love diving into problems you have no background in, and figuring out how to solve them
- You love the chaos of early stage company building, and know how to impose order
- You are ok to roll of your sleeves and dive into the details of an issue - startups are mostly about execution (vs strategy and management) and you get excited about building
- Finance: You will review our books every month (we have a bookkeeper) and conduct analysis on where we can cut costs, trends in key financial metrics, and you will work closely with our CEO on what our financial data is telling us. You will prepare all graphs, KPIs, scorecards for monthly investor reporting. On a quarterly basis you will review budget, financial forecast, and help prepare board meeting materials.
- Admin/Backoffice: This is the least glamorous part of the job but is crucial to our survival. This includes overseeing Accounts Receivables, Payroll, Benefits, taxes, and really all the internal systems that help our company function. You will have contractors and 3rd party services (like CPAs and bookkeepers) to manage so you are not on your own.
- Operations: Hiring key team members, building out management systems (OKRs, department scorecards, etc), and general project management work. We have critical deadlines to hit and you will help us build the engines to track them and ensure we are delivering on time. You will maintain our master KPI doc that shows how every department and individual is performing and what data we capture about the company.
- Misc: Given that this is an early stage startup, you can expect a lot of other tasks. This can include vetting potential vendors, removing obstacles for sales, helping us get through procurement with prospects, and other issues that may arise.
- Accounting / finance: You must be able to build a financial model, forecast, and understand basic accounting. You must be familiar with key startup metrics (CAC:LTV, etc) and you are comfortable in excel and with basic finance. You know how to make basic graphs.
- 2-5 years at a startup, VC, management consulting firm, or in an ops role.
- Some exposure to startups or tech (or a clear reason why you want to join a startup).
- In Utah and able to come into office 1-2 days a week in either Lehi, Draper, or SLC
- Ambitious and a high productivity person. Startups need people who can put their head down and get stuff done!
- Salary is up for negotiation based on experience, but will be competitive. You will also have access to stock options, bonus, and full health benefits. Unlimited PTO. Unlimited fun. Fantastic work experience.
