Job Title: Law Enforcement Officer

Department: Public Safety

Reports To: Sergeant - Chief of Police

FLSA Status: Exempt

TS RANGE: 9/10 ($32.28)


SUMMARY: In cooperation with the community, performs patrol, investigative, service and enforcement functions, provides for the safety of the public, and performs related duties as required. Provides good customer service; communicates courteously and responsively, and provides effective and efficient service to the public and co-workers.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Patrols on foot and/or in a radio equipped patrol car or boat within tribal jurisdiction to prevent violations of tribal laws, codes, and ordinances.
  • Performs complex investigation, renders service, enforces traffic and criminal laws, and generally provides for the safety of the public.
  • Enforces tribal laws, codes, and ordinances. Issues warnings and citations where appropriate and makes arrests when necessary.
  • Seizes equipment and evidence relative to violations for disposition by the courts.
  • Reads and applies department policies, rules, regulations, instructions, laws and ordinances, and general literature pertaining to policing.
  • Prepares written reports and memoranda summarizing information. Uses computers for reports, communications, and information retrieval.
  • Testifies and presents evidence in court.
  • Responsible for the protection and conservation of fish, wildlife, and natural resources through the enforcement of tribal hunting and fishing ordinances on the reservation, and in the Tribe’s usual and accustomed fishing waters and hunting lands.
  • Arranges for disposition of fish, game, and other natural resources unlawfully taken.
  • Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.
  • May be assigned specialty duties such as Community Relations Officer, Drug Task Force, Water Rescue, or K-9 Unit as becomes available.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • May be assigned duties under Squaxin Emergency Management Operations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position receives supervision, but must be able to perform work independently. No supervision responsibilities.


QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Must be twenty-one years of age.
  • Must have or be able to obtain Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation. (Including but not limited to: Polygraph; Psychological: Drug Screen Urinalysis)
  • No felony convictions.
  • No Domestic Violence convictions or restraints.
  • No violation, convictions, or restraints for actions made against children or vulnerable adults.
  • No moving violation convictions or a suspended, restricted, or revoked license in the previous 24 months.
  • No false, untrue statements or material omissions in the application and related paperwork or during the selection process.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and tribal laws; codes, and regulations preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly; orally and in writing.
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations firmly, tactfully and with respect to individual rights and dignity.
  • Skill level in the use of firearms, EVOC, defensive tactics to meet state standards.
  • Ability for certification in CPR/first-aid procedures.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with applicable laws or regulations.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work of this class.
  • Maintain any training and credential requirements as per policy and procedure.
  • Successful completion of basic law enforcement officers training program prescribed by the BIA or State of Washington.
  • Ability to work rotating shift assignments, operating on a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week schedule.


LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conforms to a prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane, and solid geometry or trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete variables.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Graduate of a Basic Law Enforcement Academy; Meet Washington State Criminal Justice Standards; Washington State Driver’s License. Must pass a thorough background investigation.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat.


DRUG FREE WORKPLACE: The successful candidate will be required to have a urinalysis for drug and alcohol screening in accordance with the Tribe’s Drug Free Workplace Policy.


INDIAN PREFERENCE: Indian Preference will be exercised in the hiring of this position in accordance with the Tribe’s Personnel Policies.

Requirements:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: MA & One year of directly related experience. OR Bachelors Degree and three years of directly related experience OR Associate’s Degree and five years of directly related experience required. OR High School Diploma and seven years of directly related experience. OR Graduation from Bureau of Indian Academy or Washington State Police Academy.
