Position Summary: In this role, you will be responsible for managing and ensuring compliance with state and local sales and use tax regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of sales and use tax laws, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work cross-functionally with various departments to resolve tax-related issues and optimize tax processes.
Key Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
Sales and Use Tax Compliance
- Prepare and file sales and use tax returns in a timely and accurate manner for multiple Maine dealer and rental locations.
- Review and analyze transactional data to ensure accurate sales and use tax calculations.
- Monitor and track changes in sales and use tax laws and ensure the business is in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
- Coordinate with multiple locations to address any tax-related concerns or inquiries.
Taxability Analysis
- Review sales transactions and purchase activities to assess taxability and ensure proper sales and use tax remittance.
- Assist in determining the appropriate application of sales and use tax exemptions and ensuring the proper documentation is maintained.
Audit Support
- Lead internal and external audits related to sales and use tax matters.
- Work with tax authorities to resolve inquiries or audit issues, providing the necessary documentation and explanations.
Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities for improving sales and use tax compliance processes, systems, and controls.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including nance, accounting, and operations, to enhance understanding and accuracy of sales tax practices.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain proper records and documentation in line with compliance and audit requirements.
- Prepare periodic internal reports on sales and use tax status, risks, and opportunities for process optimization.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Certification in sales and use tax (e.g., CMI, CPA) is strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 2-4 years of experience in sales and use tax, preferably in a corporate environment or public accounting.
- Knowledge of sales and use tax laws pertaining to dealerships would be strongly preferred.
Skills
- Strong understanding of sales and use tax principles and regulations.
- Proficient with business management software, Excel, and Google Sheets.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
