However, ManTech also has a small Environmental, Range, and Sustainability Services team (~45 people) of biologists, ecologists, conservationists, environmental planners, and GIS professionals based out of California who work on federal contracts with various military installations across the Western region. This satellite team works with military and civilian personnel on federal landholdings to responsibly and effectively manage land and wildlife for conservation. We are seeking an entry-level Conservation Biologist that will be responsible for implementing our invasive species control and restoration projects in wildland settings primarily on Vandenberg Space Force Base and Naval Base Ventura County San Nicolas Island. The Biologist will work under the direction of the Invasive Species & Restoration Field Managers and must have a strong interest in botanical identification. Roles & Responsibilities include but are not limited to: remove non-native invasive plants primarily via chemical and manual methods install native outplantings install and maintain irrigation systems collect and clean native seed for propagation propagate and maintain native plants in a remote island greenhouse setting monitor restoration success via established protocols occasionally perform surveys for threatened and endangered flora and fauna under supervision collect accurate data on smart phones with Esri Field Maps navigate using GPS map various plant species use handheld power equipment such as chain saws and brush cutters mix and apply herbicide with backpack and/or boom sprayers drive 4WD and trailered loads identify maintenance needs of equipment, e.g., pumps, engines, trailers, vehicles, etc. This is a non-exempt, entry-level and physical position. The candidate must work well with people as part of a field crew who work in a variety of habitats such as coastal dune, coastal scrub, chaparral, wetland, and riparian settings. Applicants must have enthusiasm for working outdoors, the ability to carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs.) and may be exposed to pests such as ticks and poison oak. Wage is commensurate with experience and will range from $23/hr - $25/hr. Applicants must reside in or be willing to relocate near Lompoc, CA (Santa Barbara County) and occasional overnight travel will be required to various installations e.g., NBVC San Nicolas Island, Pillar Point Air Force Station, and others. Staff are based out of Lompoc, CA and work an Alternative Workweek Schedule (AWS), Monday – Thursday, 10-hour days. This is a non-exempt position contingent on passing the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) Qualified Applicator’s Certificate (QAC) exam to apply herbicide on Dept. of Defense lands. Degree in Biology, Ecology, or related Natural Resources field required 1 years’ experience preferred with biological resources, preferably with central and southern California coastal plant species and vegetation communities Ability to identify common local vegetation types including both native and non-native plant species in a variety of habitats throughout California Ability to pass a written exam to obtain CA Dept. of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate Good verbal and written communication skills Knowledge of ecology, conservation biology, habitat restoration Strong leadership skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and exemplary work habits, especially related to safety, common sense, punctuality, and adaptability Clearance: None required. Physical Requirements: Ability to carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs.) Be able to move around the office and in the field Must be able to observe and report The projected compensation range for this position is $41,900-$69,100. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
