Principal Responsibility
St. Anthony’s Medical Clinic provides primary and specialty care to individuals and families in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Our range of primary, preventative, and ancillary care support all patients in building healthy lifestyles for themselves and their families. As part of a multidisciplinary team including physicians, NPs, RNs, medical assistants, front office staff, care/case managers, medical records, and community health workers, you will work to provide comprehensive care to our patients. The Medical Assistant (LMA) provides quality patient care and assists with patient flow during clinic hours. In the spirit of our Franciscan values and heritage, our team provides compassion and care daily. As a steward of healing and social justice, you are expected to meet the following duties:
Guest Engagement
- Assist with intake, financial screening, and set-up for patient visits.
- Takes and records temperatures, respiration, blood pressure, and pulse, as well as other information relevant to patient visits and within the scope of practice.
- Under the direction of a clinical provider or nursing staff, administer treatment and diagnostic tests as needed.
- Maintains patient charts and records in accordance with standard practices.
- Assist with activities such as coordinating immunizations for adults and pediatrics. Follow-up on missed appointments, reminder calls, lost-to-care calls, and high-risk referrals. Track abnormal PAPS and ensure proper patient follow-up and referrals.
- Translate clinical language and concepts into clear, simple, and understandable information for patients and clients to maximize the potential for them to take reasonable action.
- Adhere to SAF client confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines. Adheres to Child Abuse and Domestic Violence reporting guidelines.
- Treat all guests with empathy, dignity, and respect. Seek to understand the other person's perspective and experience.
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively across cultures and an openness to learning about cultures not familiar to oneself.
Program Administration and Operations
- Prepare, clean, and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment, disposing of contaminated items according to protocol.
- Assist as needed, including medication refill requests, specialty and procedure referrals, and pre and post-clinic chart review.
- Assist with clinic problem-solving, patient wait times and other areas of concern to increase efficiency and quality of services.
- Work collaboratively with clinic staff on programs to improve patient outcomes. Assists in organizing and participating in quality improvement activities using the PDSA model to improve systems/services.
- Coordinate with the Nurse Manager to complete routine quality control tests for lab test equipment (glucometers, urinalysis machines, hemoglobin testing machines, HGBA1C testing machines, etc.) in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and facility policy.
- Assist with daily and monthly quality assurance reviews, including emergency kit check-off.
- Participate in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients in conjunction with the RNs.
- Complete reports and all other paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
- Enter data and information electronically as required. Looks up data and reports electronically through a database as requested.
- Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures
- Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, service delivery, and guest care and engagement.

- Participate in relevant meetings supporting team communication and the program's capacity to fulfill organizational goals and mission.

Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of high school, supplemented by graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant training program or equivalent experience required. Phlebotomy certification is a plus.
- Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, or Vietnamese strongly preferred.
- Possession of CPR Certificate.
- Minimum of one year of experience in an outpatient medical clinic or hospital, or medical office setting.
- Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills are required.
- Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm. Can set limits and practice professional boundaries with guests, volunteers, donors, and coworkers.
- Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
- Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies (computers, smartphones, and iPads) to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks with attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent work habits: punctual, reliable, cooperative, team player.
- Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired.
