St. Charles Community College is seeking a full-time Assistant Baseball Coach/Athletics Field Specialist who will assist the Head Coach in the organization, management, and administration of Division I men's Baseball program, oversee the management of the playing field(s), exterior landscape/hardscape, batting cages, bull pens, equipment, and common areas at the facility to ensure a safe and competitive playing environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
- Assists the Head Coach in the organization, management, and administration of a NJCAA Division 1 Baseball program.
- Assists with practice and game coaching, recruitment of prospective student athletes, scouting, strength and conditioning, travel arrangements, off-season program, fundraising, baseball camps, equipment distribution, inventory and other duties assigned by the head baseball coach and athletic director.
- Plans, develops, coordinates and implements grounds keeping operational procedures.
- Recruits prospective student athletes
- Conducts practices and coaches games
- Handles the scouting, strength and conditioning training, travel arrangements, off-season program, fund-raising activities, softball camps, equipment distribution, and inventory.
- Demonstrates effective organizational, promotion, recruitment, and fundraising strategies
- Demonstrates high ethical standards and exhibits a strict adherence to NJCAA, College, departmental rules and regulations and a commitment to student achievement in academics
- Responsible for exterior landscaping and hardscaping.
- Oversees the purchasing, maintenance and repair of equipment used.
- Provides professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to the Athletics Director, as needed.
- Responsible for managing and maintaining the playing surfaces and facilities for playability and athlete and staff safety, which may include athletic fields (natural grass and synthetic surfaces), infield skin, mound and home plate areas, bull pens, tunnels, batters' boxes, grass to skin transitions, soccer pitch, and soccer practice pitch.
- Responsible for weather monitoring, supervision of tarp handling, field maintenance equipment, irrigation systems, fencing, warning tracks, facility grounds, landscaping/ornamental, sod farm, nursery, and other properties as specified by the Athletics Director.
- Manages construction, renovation and/or reconstruction of the playing surfaces, whether performed in-house or by outside contractors.
- Keeps accurate and complete records of inventory, weather data, maintenance procedures, chemical applications, etc.
- Plans maintenance and project work, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Develops and implements plans to reduce impacts on the environment including recycling, storm water management, waste management and erosion control, and improve the overall sustainability of the facilities.
- Specifies, purchases (or leases) equipment and necessary supplies/materials to maintain the sports facilities and properties.
- Manages inventory and oversees the preventive equipment maintenance and replacement programs.
- Exercises cost control measures to keep operating and capital expenses in line with the approved budgets.
- Communicates with users of the field and with the Athletics Director, Grounds Supervisor and coaches to discuss activities, goals, plans and user input.
When not in an athletic season or caring for the athletic fields, job duties will include:
- Ensures proper appearance of campus grounds, including picking up trash, emptying parking lot trash containers, and cleaning parking lots and plaza areas.
- Performs maintenance to grounds vehicles and equipment; performs routine maintenance to equipment; communicates problems with equipment to grounds supervisor.
- Performs snow removal, including shoveling, plowing parking areas and access roads, and application of snow removal chemicals.
- Assists with maintenance needs as needed.
- Assist housekeeping department with maintaining appearance of campus.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interviews, hires, trains, and supervises college Work Study students.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor's degree preferred) and a minimum of 3 years' experience required.
- Advanced knowledge of agronomy and environmental turf grass management practices including pest/disease/weed management; an understanding of soil chemistry; a working knowledge of sports field construction principles, practices and methods; and a thorough understanding of standards for field layout, marking and maintenance. High degree of problem solving and decision making and strong oral and written communications skills needed. Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting the management and operations of athletic fields and facilities.
- Must be able to operate riding mowers, walk behind mowers, push mower, weed eaters, edger, hedge trimmer, tractor, aerator, blower, vacuum, sprayers; mechanical tools (wrenches, torque, tire tools, press); ground tools (shovels, rakes, pruners, picks); equipment (welders, grinders, excavating, finish grading, backhoe, front loader, spray rig and fork lift); electronic devices (testing equipment, computer, calculator, software: word processing).
