What are the responsibilities and job description for the Municipal Court Clerk position at St. Charles County Government?
JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to provide customer service by responding to inquiries for information on court processes; and provide courtroom and clerical assistance. Serves as a lead worker for the Assistant Court Clerk.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervises municipal court in Judge’s and/or Administrator’s absence. Enters payroll in court administrator’s absence.
- Assists in training personnel.
- Enters probation information, tracks and enters violation reports and/or suspensions or completions of probation files.
- Assists with entering requisitions of accounts payable items.
- Assists in monitoring electronic attorney entry system and credit card payment transactions.
- Greets walk-in traffic in need of assistance providing information on court processes as appropriate.
- Receives phone calls, handles calls as appropriate, takes messages or transfers caller to appropriate person/department.
- Files and retrieves tickets. Performs data entry for each case; enters tickets, disposition and court costs information.
- Attends Municipal Court Traffic Violation sessions.
- Accepts appearance, waiver of trial and plea of guilty and payment of fines and costs. Accepts cash bail, enters appearance on docket and notifies arresting officer and witnesses for plea of not guilty.
- Takes oaths and affirmations. Accepts signed complaints.
- Prepares daily court session reports to include: defendant name, type of violation, disposition, fines and court fees assessed and collected.
- Prepares docket, reviews case files, prepares court orders, serves in courtroom, prepares reports, and accepts fees. Assists with preparing financial data.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Education
- General/tech high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Job Experience
- 1-3 years of experience.
- 2 years of relevant clerical experience in a legal or court environment. Knowledge of SMC court software is desirable.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic office practices and record keeping. Requires skill performing record keeping and customer service in a legal or court environment.
- Knowledge of court procedures, operations and scope of authority of the court, legal documents, laws and legal terminology.
- Requires successful completion of computerized clerical skills testing as follows:
- Keyboarding/Typing = 40 WPM
- Data Entry = 6000 KSPH
- Microsoft Word = 50%
- Basic Math = 85%
- Customer Service = 80%
