What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-Time Control Unit Officer / Corrections position at St. Charles County Government?
JOB OVERVIEW: St. Charles County is seeking to hire several individuals to serve as backup personnel within the St. Charles County Department of Corrections adult detention facility. Successful candidates will be available for work either in a scheduled or on-call capacity. Schedules will be on an as-needed basis and will vary depending on the needs of the facility with no guarantee of hours. Candidates must be available to work a minimum of 4 shifts of 4 hours in any given 28-day period [any shift or day assigned], including weekends and holidays. These are part-time/intermittent positions with no benefits provided.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates as a Correctional Officer in a limited capacity
- Primary duties are as a Control Unit Operator
- Assists in the observation and supervision of inmate activities
- Observes, records, and provides written records of activity in housing units
- Answers phones, maintains logs, and documents incidents
- Assists with organizing and securing property received or released by inmates
- Performs other related duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS:
- General or technical high school diploma or equivalent
- Must successfully complete all components of the Correctional Officer Testing Process
- Prefer experience and/or training related to corrections, criminal justice, or leadership
- Mental and emotional balance to competently handle a position with inherent authority over others in a responsible, mature, and professional manner
- Ability to display self-control and react appropriately in stressful or chaotic situations
- Ability to comply with and enforce rules and regulations
- Ability to complete tasks requiring physical activity exerting moderate, but not constant, physical effort - typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling
- Ability to participate in ongoing training, some of which may involve physical activity
- Must have a stable educational and work history and a police record free of pending charges and felony convictions
- Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record
- Reading ability to clearly understand written procedures, policies, etc.
- Writing ability to complete incident reports, daily logs, etc.
EXAMINATION PROCESS OVERVIEW:
- Video Exam – Consists of 80 multiple choice questions based on Correctional Officer scenarios
- Counting Exam – Consists of two parts with a total of 30 questions
- Reading Exam - Tests the ability to use appropriate word selections throughout sentences
- Written Exam – Tests the ability to complete a report consisting of the following: the facts of an incident, proper punctuation, and correct spelling
- Candidates must pass all components of the process to be considered for an interview
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- Upon submission and review of the employment application, applicants will be notified by the St. Charles County Department of Corrections to be scheduled for testing.
- Testing will be held in the St. Charles County Department of Corrections located at 301 N. Second Street, St. Charles, MO 63301.
- The testing process will take approximately 3 hours. - When arriving, please allow extra time for parking and check-in.
- A valid driver license or I.D. must be presented at the time of testing.
