POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR ST. CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM

TITLE: Special Education (Instructional) Aide
JOB GOALS: To assist the special education teacher in providing behavioral, instructional, and support services for students with disabilities
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Principal, Special Education Coordinator, special education teacher
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following qualifications:
- Successful completion of at least 2 years (48 semester hours) of study at an institution of higher learning OR
- An Associate’s Degree documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education OR
- Successfully pass the WorkKeys Assessment with a minimum of Level 3 scores on the following tests: Applied Mathematics; Work Place Documents; and Business Writing
- Good public relations skills
- Ability to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of students
- Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
- Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
- Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to lift/transfer students, ability to restrain students of various ages and sizes (if MCS trained), ability to feed students, and ability or provide physical support when required
- Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software to perform job
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Assists the special education teacher to implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of all
- Assists the special education teacher in identifying maintenance
- Supervises students as
- Assists the special education teacher to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and local
- Participates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans as
- Demonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and supports an environment that has goals that are both rigorous and
- Demonstrates initiative to improve job performance and in areas of
- Reports absences to special education teacher, takes leave, and prepares for substitute in accordance to board policy and
- Assists the special education teacher in managing student behavior in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and school
- Assists the special education teacher in creating a learning environment that is attractive, safe, and conducive for
- Supervises extra-curricular activities as
- Supervises morning, afternoon, detention, etc. as
- Serve as bus aides in emergency situations to maintain safety of students during transportation. This will include riding the bus when a bus aide is not
- Works independently and follows
- Participates in Managing Crisis Safely Training (MCS) and maintains certification
- Performs duties in a courteous and professional
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of
- Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and materials owned by the school system.
- Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
- Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal and the special education
SALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 184 days
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
