About the Role

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for financial oversight and strategy for the Saint Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii. Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the CFO will be responsible for achieving financial stability for the near term, and strategies to advance the mission and vision of the organization for the long term. The CFO will work closely with the executive leadership team to develop, align and implement plans which drive desired goals and outcomes. The CFO leads the finance department and is the chief financial spokesperson for the organization. The CFO architects strategic and tactical matters relating to near and long-term financial planning, real estate strategies, partnership opportunities, finance improvement initiatives, and securing of new funding.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Partners with the CEO in identifying new business and funding opportunities, scenario planning, risk management, and resolution of significant issues.
  • Creates and establishes financial objectives that align with the company's plan for growth and expansion. Communicates objectives and outcomes at all levels. Translates financial information for greater insights and action for coordinated movement.
  • Assesses and evaluates financial performance to near- and long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts. Provides real-time insights and recommendations to influence business improvements for adaptive leadership on both short-term and long-term growth plans.
  • Identifies, acquires and implements systems and software to provide critical financial and operational information. Evaluates and supports automating processes and increasing working efficiency.
  • Responsible for hiring, orientation, training and evaluation of staff in the Finance Department.
  • Evaluates the finance department structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group, as well as mentoring staff for professional and personal growth.
  • Provides the President & CEO with financial planning models.
  • Works with the leadership team to ensure programmatic success through cost analysis support, and compliance with all contractual and programmatic requirements. This includes :

1) interpreting legislative and programmatic rules and regulations to ensure compliance with all federal, state, local and contractual guidelines,

2) ensuring that all government regulations and requirements are disseminated to appropriate personnel, and monitoring compliance.

  • Oversees the management and coordination of revenue cycle and fiscal reporting activities for the organization including reports to funding agencies, development and monitoring of organizational and contract / grant budgets.
  • Ensures adequate controls are installed and that substantiating documentation is approved and available for independent and governmental audits.
  • Oversees the systems of internal controls to safeguard financial assets of the organization and oversees federal awards and programs. Oversees the coordination and activities of independent auditors ensuring all A-133 audit issues are resolved, and the preparation of the annual financial statements is in accordance with U.S. GAAP and federal, state and other required supplementary schedules and information.
  • Oversees business insurance plans and analysis.

  • Requirements

    Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Master's degree and / or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred.
  • Experience

  • Previous experience as a Chief Financial Officer, with proven skills in strategic leadership or in progressively responsible financial leadership roles
  • Minimum 7 years of financial experience and management experience with the day-to-day financial operations of an organization.
  • Previous experience with a non-profit, healthcare organization, preferred.
  • Skills Required

    Knowledge of :

  • Not-for-profit accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, OMB Circulars A-133, A-110 and A-122, TANF program regulations and compliance requirements, and appropriate Code of Federal Regulations sections.
  • Resources of public and private social service and related agencies.
  • Organizational development, human resources, and program operations.
  • Financial technology, including but not limited to budget and / other accounting / finance related systems
  • General office software, particularly the Microsoft Office Suite and use of databases
  • Communication and Contacts :

    Inside and outside contacts involving difficult negotiations, related to a major division or function, development of networks and development of teamwork. Requires well-developed sense of timing and strategy.
