Job Description
Title: Assistant Teacher
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- CDA or Certificate of Early Childhood Preferrd
- High School diploma, or GED, and 18 years of age
- Must complete Child Protective Services and Criminal Check (we will provide information)
- Experience in a preschool setting as an assistant teacher
- Administrative courses and experience are a plus.
- Must complete CPR and First Aid training in first 45 days of hire.
- Must be able to lift a 40 pound child.
- Must be able to sit on the floor, bend, kneel, squat, stand for long periods of time, run after children
- Proficient computer skills that include Microsoft Office.
- Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to take direction and work independently.
- Must communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
- Must have knowledge of Early Childhood Development and complete ongoing training as instructed (we provide training).
- Must have a groomed and professional appearance.
- Must complete the 10 hour VA Professional Training for Child Care Providers. We will provide information)
General Job Description:
- Assist the teacher in implementing the daily program.
- Provide assistance in implementing the curriculum.
- Manage children’s behavior, using positive behavior plans provided by the Curriculum Specialist.
- Supervising the classroom, according to the plans of the teacher when the teacher is out.
- Helping with lessons, preparation of materials for lessons, meals, preparation of snacks and other activities as needed.
- Reporting to the teacher any equipment repairs or replacements needed, maintenance needed in the room or elsewhere in the building or on the playground, and supplies that need to be ordered, etc.
- Assist teacher in keeping the classroom organized and materials cleaned regularly
- Promoting good rapport among staff members.
- Attending staff meetings, programs, workshops, etc. as planned by school/Program Manager.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding children and their families.
- Maintaining professional conduct and attitudes in working with parents and staff as well as visitors, volunteers, etc.
- Exhibit a willingness to follow through, in a positive manner, requests made by teachers and administration.
- Supervise children closely when on the playground and on field trips
- Serving where needed to best meet the needs of the children and Center. Examples of this would be filling up water coolers, setting up playground, taking children to bathroom, keeping interior of vans clean, cleaning up rooms after meals, snacks, etc.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Classroom management:
- Plan activities which encourage each child’s growth in the areas of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development.
- Collaborate with co-teacher to create and reinforce classroom expectation and rules and systematically teach those expectations to children.
- Create systems of organization in the classroom that lead children toward independence (Labeling materials, clear definition of centers, consistent schedules, etc)
- Implement the strategies of CSEFEL to create a healthy social emotional environment for the children: o Emotional literacy o Visual strategies o Problem solving instruction o Social Stories
- Recognize and consider the individual needs of each child in relation to: o Cultural and socioeconomic background o Special needs, special talents and interests o Style and pace of learning o Helping children learn to think creatively, to solve problems independently and to respect themselves and others.
Classroom maintenance:
- Notify program manager when maintenance is needed in the room or elsewhere in the building.
- Replenish materials and supplies for the classroom at the end of the day in preparation for next day.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
- Change water in sink every other day in preparation for next day and refill water coolers daily.
Expectations:
- Relates well to children, adults are expected to be involved directly with children and able to be on the floor regularly during play
- Knowledgeable in ‘developmentally appropriate practice’ for children
- Respectful exchanges with parents and co-workers
