Responsibilities
The Clinical Coding Specialist assigns the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to all inpatient accounts according to hospital coding and billing rules for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing, adhering to established ICD-10-CM coding conventions and guidelines and UHDDS reporting guidelines.
• Reviews/analyzes patient records via Meditech documentation navigation; use of 3M HDM system, 3M CRS software, and concurrent review of CDE Program to apply accurate codes for diagnoses and procedures to establish reconciliation of patient data with Clinical Documentation Specialists. (CDS) for Inpatient accounts.• Verifies CDS clarifications to assure optimal coding of encounters for Inpatient accounts.• Code Andrus and Dobbs outpatient accounts. • Maintains education by attending training sessions, relevant organizational meetings, webinars, reviews Coding Clinics, etc. to enhance coding skills.• Asks for appropriate clarification; accesses resources to verify accuracy of coding.• Reviews Discharges Not Final Billed (DNFB) listing daily; prioritizes work accordingly with Coding Manager’s input.• Maintains certification credentials.• Incorporates the Hospital and Department’s Mission Statements in daily work activities.• Required to work flexible hours when necessary.• Must complete all required hospital inservice programs.
Qualifications
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• 3 - 5 years inpatient coding experience• Knowledge of PC operation• Effective communication skills with all levels in the organization• Team approach with CDI staff and Medical Staff• Computer literacy of hospital system (Meditech)• Knowledge of 3M HDM Coding System• Proficiency in medical record analysis and ICD 10 CM/PCS, CPT coding methodology and coding guidelines.
EDUCATION
• High School Graduate or equivalent. • AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA)(Inpatient)• Preferred: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA)
