What are the responsibilities and job description for the Upper School History Teacher position at St. Johns Country Day School?
Job Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver lessons for various History sections, including experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
- Teach electives in the History and Social Studies Department as needed by the Department Chair.
- Prepare academic materials, including homework assignments, syllabi, and instructional handouts; report to the department chair monthly regarding the effectiveness of concepts.
- Facilitate classroom discussions and encourage the participation of all students, incorporating relevant reading and current events.
- Grade papers, tests, and homework, monitor progress, and adapt lesson plans to meet students’ needs.
- Assess the individual strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities of each student, addressing issues as needed.
- Uphold communicated rules and behavior expectations for a disciplined and inclusive classroom setting.
- Communicate with parents regarding noteworthy achievements, academic challenges, special considerations, or concerns.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or history
- A minimum of five years teaching experience in the field of history and/or social studies
- Master’s degree in Education and/or History, or a related field
- AP teaching experience, particularly in World History
- Previous experience in the Harkness method
