St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Construction Inspector for our well established Growth Management Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The St. Johns County Growth Management Department is responsible reviewing all private development projects in the County for compliance with Land Development Regulations. We currently have 9 Construction Inspectors, they currently work 4 – 10 hour days, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday).
Employees work in a team-oriented environment and coordinate with other Departments and Divisions to provide the best services to our citizens and to maintain the quality of life that brought so many to St. Johns County. Inclement weather and unsafe filed conditions contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to ensure construction meets County standards. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations. Contacts are typically with other county employees, contractors, engineers, and members of the general public. Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, or to resolve problems.
The major duties of this position are as follows:
- Inspects surveyed rights-of-way, the removal of unsuitable materials, soil testing, the installation of drainage and utility pipes, and the proper thickness and types of asphalt; checks subgrade and base for compaction and thickness; field checks dimensions on ponds, lakes, slopes and roadways.
- Provides technical review of as-built plan submittals.
- Assists reviewing engineers with construction plan clearance sheets, and as-built packages.
- Performs residential lot grading and drainage complaint inspections.
- Monitors construction activities in the county to ensure proper permitting was obtained.
- Completes inspection reports.
- Completes lot grading inspections; inspects grade work and construction on residential sites to ensure compliance with approved site plans and county specifications.
- Investigates and develops resolutions for drainage complaints received from the general public.
- Reviews clearance sheets to ensure that site plans include correct drainage plans.
- Maintains files and records, full-time presence on the job and performs other duties as assigned.
Candidates for Construction Inspector are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain the appropriate state certification for the type of inspection(s) conducted.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.

Salary : $52,220 - $66,901
