St. Johns County Division of Animal Control is seeking a Senior Animal Care Technician to work at our St. Johns County Pet Adoption and Holding Center located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

The purpose of this position is to provide compassionate animal husbandry in the care of the Division of Animal Control and the Pet Center. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of division operations.
The ideal Senior Animal Care Technician candidate must possess St. Johns County’s core values of compassion, innovation, and trustworthiness and must work well in a collaborative team environment. Some of the specific tasks include but are not limited to:
- Feeds and waters animals.
- Monitors animals for illness and administers medications as instructed.
- Assists Veterinary Technicians with euthanasia when necessary.
- Cleans & sterilizes cages, equipment, supplies, rooms (primary and secondary enclosures)
- Monitors sterilizing system & other facility equipment & assists in reporting need for repair
- Changes cages, equipment, supplies, & rooms
- Operate equipment, use supplies, and perform all duties in accordance with safety guidelines
- Under minimal direction, performs caretaking duties involving specialized handling, feeding & general care of animals
- Assists in solving complex animal caretaking problems using extensive knowledge & experience
- Directs, supervises, and evaluates the work of assigned personnel. Schedules associated on-call and shift calendars.
- Provides training, mentoring & work direction to junior staff, assisting with problems as necessary
- Provides facility tours to the general public.
- Assists with socialization of animals.
- May assist other division staff in carrying out projects or assigned duties.
- Maintains a full-time presence of the job.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Candidates for the Senior Animal Care Technician are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the nature of the work and be able to answer questions and resolve problems, associated with five years of experience or service in the animal care industry.
- Must obtain and maintain Florida Animal Control Association Certification in Euthanasia within six months of hire.
- Must obtain and maintain Federal Emergency Management Agency Certifications related to Animal Emergency Response (IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700) within six months of hire.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
- Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
- Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
- Must be able to operate a computer.
