Hydrologic Modeler (Engineer Scientist III or IV)

Bureau of Watershed Management and Modeling

 

Job Summary: Performs hydrologic modeling and data analysis to support water resources management, flood protection, water quality improvements, environmental restoration, and minimum flows and levels assessment.

 

Job duties include:

Performs water quantity and water quality studies of surface water basins using major hydrologic and hydraulic models such as: BASINS/HSPF, StormWise (formerly ICPR4), HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWMM, and District-developed models; Performs computer model calibration and verification of watershed simulations; Maintains and updates water quantity/quality simulation models.

Determines data needs for watershed studies and computer applications such as: GIS data, land use and soil data, meteorological data, hydraulic, and water quality data; Performs statistical analyses and quality control on collected data and simulated results; Performs hydraulic simulation of streams and rivers, such as stage and discharge relationships for applications in other computer models.

Performs statistical analysis of hydrologic data, including stream discharge and water quality data frequency analysis, development of flow duration curves, and regression and trend analysis.

Writes technical reports and presents study results to internal and external stakeholders. Participates in the peer review process by preparing study reports and presentations to be peer reviewed, responding to reviewers' comments by either written/oral means, and making the proper adjustments based on the reviewer's comments.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineer Scientist III requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water resource engineering, or related field and four years of professional experience directly related to the field in which the position is assigned.

Engineer Scientist IV requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water resource engineering, or related field and six years of experience directly related to the field in which the position is assigned.

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water resource engineering, or related field can substitute for one year of the required experience. 

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in geology, hydrology, environmental, civil, hydraulic, agricultural or water resource engineering, or related field can substitute for two years of the required experience.

Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

 

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:

Mostly office environment sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products. 

Periodic field visits may occur, which would require the ability to endure outdoor environments in uncomfortable temperatures, inclement weather, and remote locations.

 

Travel:

Minimal travel to attend off-site meetings, sometimes outside of normal business hours including overnight. 

 

Additional Details:

Starting Salary Range:       

Engineer Scientist III: $66,164.80 - $86,008.00

Engineer Scientist IV: $70,803.20 - $92,040.00

Starting salary is based on qualifications and experience.
