Title: Director of Music

Reports to: Pastor/Administrator

Purpose: The Director of Music plans and coordinates the parish music in order to uphold, celebrate, and propagate Catholic tradition in the liturgy and in all parish devotions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provides organ music for all weekend Masses, funerals, weddings, Holy Days, and for special liturgical events including those outside and within the seasons of Lent, Easter, Advent & Christmas

· Sings at all such events as necessary

· Directs all cantors and any and all parish choirs, leading in their development as necessary

· Assists in the recruitment of qualified cantors and choir members

· Plans all liturgical music with the pastor/administrator

· Supervises maintenance of the organ and audio equipment, etc. in coordination with the pastor and parish facility director

· Plans all liturgical music from the parish hymnal and, when directed by the pastor, the Liber Usualis

· Inserts Latin into the sung liturgy during special church seasons and at other times determined by the pastor/administrator

· Consults with the pastor/administrator in determining the goals and evaluating the outcomes of the parish music program

· Provides music recommendations as found in the parish hymnal especially as these relate to the Church’s rich and enduring, music tradition

· Develops and/or grows the parish choir/s as determined by the pastor/administrator

· Establishes a regular rehearsal schedule for cantors and choir in consultation with the pastor/administrator

· Serves at special liturgical events (e.g. Corpus Christi, Tenebrae) providing traditional music for such events

· Assists in the coordination of or provides instruction for any special music programs initiated in the parish

· Sets the digital display of the hymn page numbers for Holy Mass or as needed at special liturgical events

· Working knowledge of computers and supportive software

· Coordinates coverage of liturgical music for any requested absences

· Maintains music library/cabinet as necessary

· Encourages parishioner participation in singing liturgical hymns and Mass parts

· Acts as a prayerful example to all volunteers in the music ministry

Job Qualifications:

· Practicing Catholic who actively participates in the Sacramental life of the Church

· Minimum of 5 years prior experience in music ministry preferred

· Excellence in vocal and organ skills

· BA degree in music preferred

· Comprehensive knowledge of Catholic Church teaching with particular emphases in liturgical tradition and knowledgeable in wedding, funeral and Sacramental music

· Ready knowledge of traditional, liturgical music

· Ability and patience to lead and teach choir, and experience in choir direction

· Effective communication skills and willingness to work as part of a parish team

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends in conjunction with responsibilities of the position

Physical Performance:

· Ability to sit and stand as required in the performance of duties

· Ability to sing, conduct, read and speak as required in the performance of duties

· Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
