What are the responsibilities and job description for the Area Land Manager position at St. Louis County, MN?
The Land and Minerals Department is seeking a highly motivated and responsible professional to manage forestry and resource management programs in the South Area of St. Louis County. This positions currently supervises 11 forestry staff primarily conducting forest management planning and timber sale operations across approximately 450,000 acres of public land.
Standard work schedule is 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Position location will be at the Land and Minerals Department Pike Lake Area office.

* 1. Assigns, directs and coordinates the work of assigned staff; structures and schedules work activities and approves leaves and overtime; establishes performance standards and appraises work performance; prepares commendations and executes oral reprimands; effectively recommends disciplinary actions including suspension and dismissal, and upon approval of the appointing authority, may prepare documentation and notification of such action; trains employees and provides guidance; may use discretion in recommending candidates to the appointing authority for selection; and represents management in Step 1 of the grievance procedure.
* 2. Manages area forestry, certification, inventory, regeneration, aggregate and cabin lease programs; facilitates the issuance of timber contracts and various land use agreements.
* 3. Develops, prepares, and reviews reports to effectively monitor land management projects.
* 4. Reviews and approves land sales and land classifications.
* 5. Reviews and assists in land exchanges and land partitions.
* 6. Assists in the preparation and administration of various authorizations, leases and easements.
* 7. Represents the Department as assigned; coordinates and collaborates with local, state and federal agencies; prepares and provides presentations.
* 8. Administers protection plans in areas requiring special management and for populations of sensitive species.
* 9. Assists in the management of invasive species and insect and disease damage conditions.
*10. Prepares area budget and financial reports; monitors and recommends efficiencies.
*11. Directs management of area facilities and fleet resources.
*12. Demonstrates punctual and reliable attendance in accordance with designated work schedule.
*13. Communicates, monitors and enforces compliance with safety rules, laws and practices; ensures proper safety equipment and procedures are used in all operations under their supervision.
14. Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Pass/Fail):
- Graduation from a college or university with an Associate's degree accredited by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) under the Forestry program standard AND eight (8) years full-time paid verifiable progressively responsible experience in forestry or forest management; OR graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's degree accredited by the SAF under the Forestry program standard AND six (6) years full-time paid verifiable progressively responsible experience in forestry or forest management; OR graduation from a college or university with a Master's degree accredited by the SAF under the Forestry program standard AND four (4) years full-time paid verifiable progressively responsible experience in forestry or forest management.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
