POSITION OVERVIEW: The Pre-Trial Release Officer is responsible for assessing, supervising, and monitoring individuals who are awaiting trial. This role ensures that individuals comply with the conditions of their pre-trial release, while maintaining public safety and promoting fairness within the judicial system. The Pre-Trial Release Officer will work closely with court officials, law enforcement agencies, and community partners to evaluate the risk and suitability of defendants for release, conduct interviews, and manage release programs.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Pre-Trial Risk Assessment and Evaluation•Conduct interviews with defendants to gather pertinent information regarding personal history, criminal background, and ties to the community.•Complete comprehensive risk assessments using structured tools and best practices to evaluate the likelihood of re-offending, failure to appear in court, or posing a danger to the community.•Make recommendations to the court based on assessment findings regarding eligibility for pre-trial release, including conditions and supervision levels.Monitoring and Supervision•Supervise individuals on pre-trial release, ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions such as check-ins, drug testing, and community service requirements.•Track and report on the progress of individuals under supervision, including compliance or violations of release terms.•Respond promptly to incidents of non-compliance, as appropriate.•Install and monitor GPS devices on defendants, ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions, and report any violations or tampering to the court.Court Liaison and Communication•Communicate regularly with the courts, attorneys, and other relevant parties regarding the status of individuals on pre-trial release.•Prepare and present written reports on pre-trial release candidates, including recommendations and updates on compliance.•Provide testimony in court hearings regarding the suitability of pre-trial release and offer expert insight on recommendations for release conditions.Case Management and Documentation•Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all cases under supervision, ensuring compliance with department policies and legal standards.•Use case management software to track progress, document violations, and ensure timely reporting. Community Outreach and Support•Collaborate with social service agencies and community programs to provide resources for individuals on pre-trial release, such as employment assistance, housing support, or substance abuse treatment.•Offer referrals for additional services to address needs that may affect an individual’s ability to comply with pre-trial release conditions.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Pre-Trial Release Officer must be able to remain seated for extended periods while conducting interviews, preparing reports, and using case management software. The role may require occasional travel between courtrooms, client residences, or county jail locations. The officer must be capable of responding quickly to situations of non-compliance, which may involve standing or walking for short periods. The position requires normal vision and hearing for monitoring client progress, conducting interviews, and maintaining accurate records. Additionally, the officer should be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds when handling files or documents.ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: The Pre-Trial Release Officer may be exposed to varying environmental conditions, including traveling to courtrooms, client homes, or county jail locations, which may involve inclement weather or unpredictable environments. There is a potential risk of encountering individuals in stressful or volatile situations, which could lead to verbal or physical confrontations. While rare, these situations require the officer to exercise de-escalation skills and, if necessary, seek assistance from law enforcement. Additionally, the role involves regular use of office equipment and technology, with minimal exposure to physical hazards.SAFETY EQUIPMENT & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Employees are required to adhere to all safety protocols and utilize appropriate safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) provided to ensure a safe working environment. Pay Grade G11Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical examination, drug testing, driver's license verification, and a full background check to include a polygraph and psychological examination conducted by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.
