Job Summary
MAJOR FUNCTION: Maintenance and renovation of County buildings, Parks, Stadiums, Playgrounds and Pools in the areas of plumbing, electrical, general carpentry, painting and mechanical equipment. May oversee work crews.
Essential Job Functions
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS NEEDED TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of the building trades.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Abilities:
- Ability to work from construction plans, rough sketches and oral and written instruction.
- Ability to complete in a timely manner all necessary paperwork for each completed job.
- Ability to remain on task and on schedule.
- Ability to read and understand and follow Material Safety Data Sheets and use of safety equipment when needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.
- Ability to work as a team, and independently, with little to no supervision.
- Ability to work overtime, nights, weekends and in emergency situations as needed.
- Ability to move and set up furniture and equipment.
Skills:
- Basic computer skills related to email and data entry.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the trades for which assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
- Perform general and specialized tasks in the construction, renovation, modification, installation and repair of buildings, equipment, apparatus and facilities.
- Perform plumbing work; repairs, replaces or cleans broken lines, valves and fixtures.
- Perform work on irrigation systems.
- Perform general carpentry work.
- Build shelving, replace moldings, install receptacles, switches, and replace light ballast, breakers and fixtures.
- Perform mechanical work on roof equipment, replacing fan motors and pumps.
- Repair audio systems and low voltage systems.
- Inspect and repair docks.
- Inspect and repair playgrounds.
- Perform related work as requested or assigned.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: During emergency conditions, all County employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. County employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Constant walking, standing, use of hands and feet, fingers, legs, reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting. Must be able to work from ladders and scaffolding. Must have sufficient physical strength (up to 75 pounds) and agility to do heavy manual labor. Strength needs to be adequate to lift heavy pump motors and moving heavy furniture. Good vision and hearing with or without correction. Hand and finger dexterity.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Some work to be done in areas which has materials containing asbestos. Proper precautions must be taken. Some work is done in close areas. Works in or around wet surfaces, work outdoors in adverse weather conditions- to work on irrigation and any other outdoor function when the need arises.
WORK HAZARDS: Many maintenance tasks may require; the use of power tools; heavy lifting, working around electrical equipment, and using different types of chemicals.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Eye protection, rubber gloves, face masks, respirators, disposable protective suits, ear muffs and steel toe shoes with soles designed for wet or slippery surfaces Wear seatbelt while in county vehicles.
Qualifications
EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years’ experience in building maintenance and in one or more of the building trades. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATION: A valid Florida driver's license may be required and a good driving record. Must complete NRPA Playground Maintenance Course within six (6) months after hiring date.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
