Overview:
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) or Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) administers occupational therapy treatments to patients, working under the direction of, and as an assistant to, Occupational Therapists by performing the following duties. The Blood and body fluids exposure is Category 1.
Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Keeps confidential all information not specifically authorized to be given to others.
- Communicates with Occupational Therapists to confirm plans of care.
- Advises family members and other supportive individuals about the level of care the patient needs as allowed by law, statute and/or regulation.
- Provides occupational therapy guidance, support, and education during patient sessions.
- Teach patients how to interact with adaptive technology.
- Show and instruct patients how to use adaptive equipment
- Guide patients through graded activities.
- Visit patients’ homes to demonstrate and/or instruct for mobility and home safety.
- Provides practice in functional skills and activities of daily living.
- Coordinates participation in sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help Residents develop or regain physical or mental functioning or adjust to disabilities.
- Observes and follows infection control policies and procedures.
- Maximize patient function.
- Demonstrates positive guest relations to internal and external staff, visitors and family members.
- Maintains good working relationships and team work between all departments and co-workers.
- Observes and follows safety policies and procedures.
- Attend all mandatory in-services as required.
- Team Members are required to report to their Department Director all incidents of actual or possible abuse of a Resident that they become aware of. Abuse in this respect includes, but is not limited to, verbal, sexual, physical, and/or mental abuse, corporal punishment, involuntary seclusion, neglect, and/or any misappropriation of property concerning St. Mark Village Residents. Team Members will make the report as soon as possible after they become aware of the incident of actual or possible abuse.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Occupation Therapists Assistants may need to supervise Rehab Techs or CNA’s following through with an established maintenance/restorative program for a resident, as required by Federal and State law, regulation, or statute. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the facility’s policies and applicable laws.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The OTA must be registered and licensed in the state of Florida to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
REQUIRED SKILL, EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
The COTA/OTA must have successfully graduated with at least an associate’s degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant school or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILL:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or Team Members of organization.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must have an active license an Occupational Therapist Assistant in the state of Florida.
