Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Practice (Law School)

St. Mary's University
San Antonio, TX Full Time
POSTED ON 12/4/2024
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/1/2029

St. Mary's University School of Law invites applications for three full-time Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors of Practice to work in one or a combination of the following academic programs: the Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing Program, the Academic Excellence Program and Bar Success Program. All positions are nine-month, full-time, non-tenure track positions. At a minimum, Professors of Practice will be hired for a two-year contract with renewal for good performance at the end of that term. Salary for a nine-month contract will range from $70,000 to $89,000, commensurate with experience. Additional stipends may be available for those working with the Bar Success Program who work over the summer months.

Successful Professors of Practice are team-oriented and collaborative, committed to excellence in teaching and academic support, and demonstrate passionate dedication to their students. These positions are student-facing and require a campus presence, except when teaching online classes. Successful candidates for these positions will teach in one or more of the following programs as determined by each candidate's interests and expertise.

Bar Success Program: This program teaches upper-level courses, including Bar Preparation for Credit and our bar coaching program, Raise the Bar. The Bar Success Program involves extensive student meetings, planning and execution of workshops, data tracking, and providing feedback on written work throughout the February and July bar cycles.

Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing Program: This program combines the skills of traditional legal research and writing with oral advocacy. The program includes two 3-credit, graded courses in the first year, the Writing Center, and upper-level writing instruction. The sections for the first-year courses in this program are kept small and average between 13-18 students.

Academic Excellence Program: This developing program teaches a broad array of legal skills to promote a deep understanding of core legal concepts, preparing students for success in both law school and practice. The program is designed to incorporate skills learned in doctrinal courses, self-regulated learning, and formulated assessment.

Professors of Practice will, among other things, participate on committees, teach classes, regularly meet with individual students, and provide extensive feedback on written work. Professors of Practice also assist with academic workshops, orientation planning and execution, and course planning and materials for the future academic year. St. Mary's has a full-time day and online part-time evening program, and Professors of Practice will teach in either or both based on the needs of the office.
