St. Paul’s School for Boys, founded in 1849, is a college-preparatory day school serving boys in grades 5 through 12. Position Description

Our athletic department is seeking a part time athletic training to work Monday through Friday from 2:00pm – 7:00pm, daily with additional evening, holiday break and/or weekend hours depending on athletic event and athletic program needs.

In this role, this athletic trainer will join a second athletic training to organize all functions of our athletic training, ensure all games/matches are covered for that day and support all student athletic training needs. In partnership with Athletic Director and coaches, this candidate will help to oversee all medical needs during all on campus athletic events, provide treatment and medical recommendations as necessary and work with school leadership to ensure student care on all levels. This position will report to the Athletic Director.


Major Responsibilities

  • Responsible for prevention, emergency care, first aid, evaluation, and rehabilitation of injuries to athletes under his/her care
  • Serve as liaison between the team physician, the athlete, the athlete’s parents, and coaching staff
  • Consult to coaching staff on conditioning, nutrition, and protective equipment
  • Assist with prevention of injuries including education for athletes and Athletic Trainers, identifying factors that put athletes “at risk”, correcting deficiencies in athletes as deemed necessary, as well as taping and bracing
  • Provide emergency care and first aid including availability of necessary equipment, communication procedures for emergency situations, and prompt, accurate triage
  • Evaluate acute and chronic injuries and refer to the team physician or specialist where appropriate. Help decide if a player may return to competition following an injury
  • Treat athletic injuries within the scope of practice as agreed upon with the team physician.
  • Develop, supervise, evaluate, and modify individual exercise programs for rehabilitation to help athletes return to a pre-injury status
  • Maintain records including injury reports, home care instructions, referrals, treatment records, rehabilitation progress notes, and insurance information
  • Liaison with school nurse, school counselors and divisions heads as it relates to student-athlete accommodations, injuries, mental health needs and/or student retention
  • Secure training room equipment and supplies as needed
  • Provide education and supervision for athletes and students
  • Cover team practices allowing access to the athletic training room
  • Cover sporting events as scheduled with the athletic director (includes school holidays and some weekends)
  • Perform Impact test for all upper school student athletes every two years
  • Ensure all student-athletes have completed medical forms on file
  • Establish a positive learning environment that promotes a high level of achievement for all students while considering the background and developmental level of the individual students
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of reports, correspondence and notices
  • Maintain accurate and complete student documentation as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations
  • Attend conferences, workshop and other professional development to maintain current knowledge of profession
  • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality
  • Collaborate with school personnel to develop school-wide initiatives to make schools safer and more effective
  • Make the training room facilities and medical attention available to school athletes with arrangements made by the coach and the Athletic Trainer
  • Partner with athletic training staff at SPSG where applicable.

Key Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:

  • Masters degree in Athletic Training and certified with BOC
  • State License or eligible
  • Excellent communication skills with three to five years school athletic training experience
  • Skill in using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines, as well as being organized, excellent time management and follow up
  • Excellent communication skills, communicating clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
  • ability to work collaboratively with a broad and diverse population of students, families, peers and colleagues
  • Knowledge and training in first aid procedures should be required for handling athletic related injuries
  • Ability to effectively communicate to ensure compliance and appropriate parties are aware and have information related to mission delivery

The St. Paul’s Schools has a compensation scale based on direct years of experience and degree held. For this part time opportunity of 25 hours per week, our salary range is $28,000 - $34,000 annually. In addition, holiday athletic training will be paid at an hourly rate over and above salaried position. In addition, part time members gain access to participate in our 403(b) retirement plan which has an immediate employer contribution and a generous, prorated time off package, including wellness days because we believe an educator’s mental and physical health is a priority for them to do their job effectively.
