St. Paul’s Teaching Fellowship Purpose and Philosophy
The purpose of having a Teaching Fellowship Program at the St. Paul’s Schools is to help us attract people who are new to education, passionate about students, and interested in pursuing a career in independent schools. The Teaching Fellowship Program would be mutually beneficial to the fellow and the division assigned by allowing divisions to fill certain teaching and extra-curricular needs, while providing the fellow with valuable experience, guidance and mentorship during their first year in an independent school setting. This position provides an excellent opportunity to explore a career in education in a collaborative and student-centered learning environment.
Teaching Fellows at the St. Paul’s Schools would be offered a one-year contract with a starting salary and benefits commiserate with a first-year teacher salary. A fellow would also be given the opportunity to apply for a full-time teaching position should one become available during their first year as a fellow.
Lower School Fellowship Structure:
During the course of the academic year, the fellow will be partnered with one homeroom teacher for the entirety of the year. For the first trimester, the fellow will spend most of the time observing classes and activities. They will help support homeroom teacher in creating activities and learn the process of preparing for parent/teacher conferences, report cards and daily planning. In addition, the fellow may start taking on small group work focused in reading and math.
By second trimester, the fellow will be taking the lead in one particular area like a particular unit or chapter in social studies, math, etc. based on homeroom teacher’s discretion. In addition, fellow will be taking more of a role in creating lesson plans and preparing for the spring. By the third trimester, the goal is for the fellow to be taking the lead in most of the homeroom day from start to finish and write comments for the specific subject they are teaching. During the entirety of the year, it will be expected the fellow helps with lunch duty, recess duty, assemblies, morning carpool, afternoon carpool in addition to some extracurricular programming like SGA or radio.
The fellow will be aligned and follow the same schedule as the homeroom teacher participating in planning times, meetings with grade level teams, curriculum committees, faculty meetings, learning services, lunch times and professional development days. The teaching fellow will also have regularly scheduled bi-weekly meetings with administration, learning services and other members of the lower school team to check in.
Interested candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in education or related field with a focus in elementary education, preferably. Ideal candidate will have a passion for working with students and fostering an inclusive, engaging learning environment, strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills and a willingness to receive mentorship and engage in professional development.

We are particularly eager to meet candidates with coaching experience who may be interested in assistant coaching with a particular sport in our community.

The St. Paul’s Schools has a compensation scale based on direct years of experience and degree held. For this opportunity, our salary amount is $43,000.
