Summary: This position is under the direction of the Chief Accountant. The Accountant I is primarily responsible for monitoring balance sheet accounts and related procedures on a regular basis and works with the Chief Accountant, to accomplish the goals in the time frames established.

- Prepares original and adjusting journal entries for the maintenance of receivables, payables, and balance sheet accounts
- Assists in reconciling bank accounts and balance sheet accounts monthly as assigned
- Records monthly payments and transfers for debt
- Enters monthly billings for utilities, leases, and drawdowns for grants in advance
- Enters and releases ACH transactions and maintains ACH template; transfers funds as appropriate
- Records and forwards checks returned NSF
- Assists in the preparation and submission of claims for public assistance
- Works with the Project Analyst on obtaining information for asset entry and preparing schedules of capital assets for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports
- Administers the periodic physical inventory counts of capital assets with other departments
- Regular, consistent attendance is required Any other duties as assigned
Competencies: Employee must be able to operate basic office equipment, office computer and software, copy machine, fax machine, calculator and scanner. Employee must have excellent organizational and time management skills. Employee must be able to communicate effectively and has excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Employee should have a familiarity with financial software packages.
Work Environment: The incumbent works in a typical office environment with little or no exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Primary functions are limited to an office environment. Occasional duties may require travel or working in non-office environment.
Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Sedentary work involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.
Required Education/Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, management, or business related field. Employee must have knowledge of standard (governmental) accounting procedures and practices. Employee must possess good organizational skills, as well as good oral and written communication skills.
